He never made his mark in shorter vesion ..not a big surprise !
Pujara runs rings around all of India's ODI specialists. He's very much a superior player. Surely he should have been in the probables. India may pick a few batsmen as ODI specialists, only for bowling sides to use their Test failings against them, to good effect.

I saw the final of the Deodhar Trophy on TV, though I was close to the venue when going in and out of a project meeting. What happened in the last ten overs was complete stupidity. First, Kedar Jadhav threw his wicket away with a poor stroke. He should know that he's not completely out of the frame for national selection, and that poor, match-losing stroke may eventually cost him a place in the ODI XI. Surya Yadav was poor throughout his innings- while he thrived on singles and twos, the strike rate suggested they were not enough. Axar Patel may call himself a batting all-rounder and target a World Cup berth and he has form on his side, but that stroke was atrocious. All of them batted like raw tailenders that Shaz and DSK were- and these two were capable, but irresponsible.

You can't say much positive about a batting side that falls like ninepins to the erratic Ashoke Dinda and feeble Biplab Samantray and a veteran spinner who played more matches than took wickets. I'd say Veer Pratap Singh's performance has been the most relevant, but while he's done well in Ranji, he's been relatively poor in the two matches he got in Deodhar. He has, however, the right raw material, and once he's at Umesh Yadav's pace, he can be a national prospect. Can't say that about Sandeep Sharma, the leading wicket taker in ODs this season, who's just a slow bowler who does well when it's windy and the pitch is grassy. Pankaj Singh, on the other hand, cranks up his OD game a great deal to take a rush of wickets in much fewer games- he's second in the tally, despite playing a lot less. With the bat, Manoj Tiwary is the one bloke who's likely to slot right into the World Cup XI on form, and while Mayank Agarwal has done well this season, he's too raw. Likewise Karun Nair.

Seems like Pujara was never in contention. Am not too surprised or disappointed though. The team would be used to the conditions by the time WC begins.

Pujara has been pidgeonholed as a Test specialist, which isn't bad, but I do feel he'd have done well in the WC.

Haven't seen the game but Axar Patel is the reason why they made it to the final.
There are a grand total of four games, including one quarter, two semis and a grand final. A team gets a maximum of three games, starting from the quarter. It's a shoot-out. There's no denying that Axar's one of the better OD all-rounders in the running for the World Cup, but that shot was atrocious, much like those of every West Zone batsman in this game.

Pujara is technically more correct and more adept at playing a long innings than the ODI specialists. Simply set Test match fields and watch the ODI specialists squirm. Pujara can handle such settings and traps a lot better.

Robin Bist now is close to a place in the Test middle order. The problem? There are many others. He can't bowl too much. He did, however, play a fighting knock to save his team from defeat against Gujarat. His FC figures look remarkable. Limited-overs, though, isn't something he's good at. His teammate, Menaria, is a regular bowler these days- but not any good, and not much good with the bat either. I hope this team makes the knockouts. They have a few worthy players.

Poor start for Akshar Patel this Ranji, but hopefully he'll pick up and finish the season with good figures.

I have hated most things about the new Star Sports but love how much Ranji they have shown this year. Managed to catch a bit of play today and was very happy to see RP Singh bowl. Was having such a nice rhythm. Never thought I would see him bowl well again, or bowl for that matter. Little joys.

He's played over 50 FC games with an average of 50, which puts him close to the middle-order, in case the selectors are fed up of Rohit and Raina, but so are many others. I'd rather have him play for India than some sprightly 22-year-old who's impressed only in youth cricket. We seem to make India prospects out of Baba Aparajith, Vijay Zol and Unmukt Chand. Hang on, we have Karn Sharma playing Tests for India! Surely Robin Bist is worth a cap?

I missed that game. How was Praveen Kumar bowling? Finished the game with very good figures.

Praveen Kumar was bowling very well. See there is no real question re Praveen Kumar's abilities. His attitude is terrible though which means that he blows hot and cold and is not reliable at all even by Indian quick standards.

Praveen, like Bhuvneshwar, Irfan, RPS and Vinay, and many other swing bowlers, seems to bowl very well when things go his way. On a flat deck, with no seam or swing, he's just another one of those batsmen-who-can-bowl-a-bit types, so he'll never be able to compete with a proper pace bowler. That was always a problem. Surely he could add enough pace to compete? He doesn't seem to try, and seems to be fine only in his comfort zone, be it bowling or batting. Let's not forget, he's been built up as one of India's best seamers on the back of one good Test series and random ODI series in sticky Sri Lanka.
And he's unfit. And can't field.
This too. Fitness has been so poor, he's almost out of time in a current Indian team. He doesn't even have loads of wickets to compensate. If he was fit as an athlete, he'd also bowl a lot faster.

Mumbai's questionable one-year-of-local-cricket rule for players who wish to join the team is now pinching them. Several Mumbai players who were not getting games, or simply not getting enough, had shifted base to other State teams, but because of this rule, they miss out on a year's cricket, and Mumbai's Ranji team, misses out on a few good players. I mean, how many top players has Mumbai lost because of this rule? I can understand if they're trying to keep fresh outsiders away, but this has also denied Mumbai's veterans their places in this side.

I can understand J&K being tough because J&K fielded a stronger team, but the current Railways team is uninspiring. Then again, UP isn't really fielding a weak team, the way Mumbai is.
