Actually, he averaged 47 in the 51 tests he played as a specialist batsman. And not a lowly 35 in the tests as a keeper as well.

Averaraged nearly 40 opening also when serving as keeper. WAG! I think had he been asked to bat at 6 or 7 and given the gloves, England could've extracted the best of both worlds from him. He averaged 70 at no.7 playing as a keeper.

Seems his legacy as usual was determined by his slightly under par performance in Ashes and hence not remembered the same way as some others.

I always thought they should've just let him open and not made him keep. Was a weapon against pace.
