Cricket stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Always knew the UK was an uninteresting place. How is cycling more exciting than basketball? Or tennis more exciting than Rugby league? I can only assume those interviewed are boring simpletons.

Cycling, darts, Formula 1 and ****ing Horse racing more exciting than cricket

Why does Athetics rank so high, does anyone give a **** about it apart from the Olympics? And it's generally all over in a few seconds or minutes.

'What a boring sport Formula One is' - Murray Walker. Tennis ranks very high on my list of uninteresting sports too.

But Darts. Frickin Darts is as exciting as cricket? WTF?

Tennis is amazing. How can people not like tennis. It's easily one of the most watchable sports, easy to understand rules, great mix of athleticism and skill. So good to watch on TV too.

I can understand people finding cricket boring, though obviously not when it's compared to darts, horse racing etc.

Tennis is good. Not saying it's not. But Rugby League is way better IMO. Team sports are so much better than individual sports.

I personally find individual sports much more enjoyable to watch than team sports. Love tennis, hate football. Enjoy rugby (but I`m SA it is a genetic predisposition apparently). I think though that is one of the reasons I love cricket so much it is the perfect mixture of individual and team sport.

I guess this is a sort of flaw with the question. I mean, watching, for example, any given 100m sprint is probably going to be a more exciting 10 seconds that the equivalent time in a cricket match would be (one delivery, I suppose). The excitement of (test, anyway) cricket comes from, for me, the context that emerges over several days. Cricket seems fairly unique to me in that you can get a lot of the excitement from the scoreline and a few snippets of text on sites like cricinfo where this would fail to capture the flow and atmosphere of other sports. Of course, it's not that watching a cricket match isn't more exciting that just following it, as it (generally) enhances the experience a lot. It's just that physically watching it doesn't seem to be the requirement to appreciate what's going on that it is with many other sports. I don't mean that people finding it boring to watch is non-issue because if people don't find it exciting when they watch it, there's a good chance they won't really bother keeping up with it and so won't discover how exciting it can be to follow.

Anyway, I've not really stayed coherently on the point I was trying to make, which is that the majority of the sports that came out ahead of cricket probably are more enjoyable to watch in terms of physically watching the sport happen, but that's not necessarily the best way to convey how exciting cricket can be.

I find football to be generally rather boring, when you get those games where teams seem to just pass it around in the midfield for 90mins. It is only exciting when teams are having a bit of a go but I still find it a bit dull.

If cycling is high it is because Britain became obsessed with the stuff after the Beijing Olympics. We are apparently successful at it.

Tennis is a remarkable sport. Very exciting. If you want to see sport at its absolute finest simply watch those Federer-Nadal Wimbledon finals from the mid 00s.

People who try to sell Cricket as an 'exciting' sport are dumb. Why would you do that. Cricket isn't 'exciting'. The beauty of the sport lies in the gradual unfolding of a narrative, the deep examination of a player's technique and temperament, and the slow burn of tension as the outcome becomes more and more inevitable, till it finally is. The length and pace of the game means that teams can work towards victory via a constantly grinding and applying pressure, whilst simultaneously allowing for dramatic moments or passages of plays to turn the game on it's head. It's both about the constant accumulation of minor victories and winning the major moments. Every Test match is a story in of itself. Every player has their moment in their spotlight. It's like a fine novel, or a great TV series, in that it's going to take you many many hours to consume it, but if it's good, it's so worth it.

People trying to market it as 'exciting' are just dumb.

Yeah, this is what I was attempting to say a few posts back, but I struggled for eloquence.

Though if Warne can use the word 'aggressive' to basically mean 'good', maybe we can do the same with the word 'exciting'

T20s are often exciting with all the action going on.

But for me true excitement is the release of well built up tension. There is nothing more exciting than watching a great batsman fighting a great bowler who looks like getting them out every ball.

I find T20 boring personally. There is no value on the six, or even the four. I think that is why they stick the cheerleaders and fireworks on, to keep everyone amused.

Here in Melbourne, announced today that the local sports radio station SEN has parted ways with their go-to cricket ‘expert’ Rodney Hogg.

This is great news for cricket fans as Hogg was embarrassingly bad; not only simplistic and uninteresting in his views but seemingly was making a virtue out of being lazy at his role; I’m sure on occasions he played up the fact that he didn’t really watch the cricket he was brought on to talk about.

On a broader level it reflects how poorly cricket fans in Victoria have been served by radio stations over the years. SEN has been around since the mid-00s and you’d think that due its popularity cricket would get significant and substantial coverage but it’s been quite the opposite.

Instead it relies on dullards like Hogg and its array of presenters from Aussie Rules backgrounds who have only a limited amount of knowledge of the sport. In the fact the station has barely had any cricket-specific shows over the years while seemingly every other less-popular sport has gotten specialised coverage.

During summer, SEN should be the go-to station for cricket fans to listen in but for multiple reasons (including how its dominated by AFL types who know very little about cricket) I never bother. Hopefully the new management leads to an improvement in the cricket coverage.

An idea I'd like to propose in regards to Test Cricket is to have an Asia X1 v Rest of World X1 series scheduled every 2 years . Dedicate say 2 months of the international calendar solely to this either by way of a 4/5 match test series

Each country has a chance to host the event every 2 years. I think it would be a fascinating way to gain some tangible evidence as to how the best players both cope and adapt across different pitch conditions, climates and other variables.

Anyone else like the idea of this?

Well the rest of the world matches did create some sensational cricket (e.g., Sobers' 254) , the ICC then unceremoniously axing them from the statistics!

Would prefer the number one ranked side at whatever date every two years vs a World XI tbh.

I wonder what Sobers's batting average was before the rest of the world test status was revoked? He made some massive scores on those tours of England and Australia.
