An NZ ATG ODI (and second eleven) side much better than the one Athlai made

Nathan Astle | Glenn Turner | Martin Crowe (c) | Kane Williamson | Ross Taylor | Chris Cairns | Brendon McCullum (wk) | Richard Hadlee | Daniel Vettori | Kyle Mills | Shane Bond

Martin Guptill | Brendon McCullum (c) | Stephen Fleming | Scott Styris | Roger Twose | Chris Harris | Luke Ronchi (wk) | Tim Southee | Gavin Larsen | Trent Boult | Danny Morrison

Again seperating the two seperate careers of Baz, otherwise if we're combining them I'll take current Baz with his 2000s wicketkeeping and a brand new injuryless back straight into the first eleven thanks, and he's the skipper.

How would people balance their SA all time side to win a test/series? There's a fair bit of flexibility because Kallis and Faulkner are such solid 5th/6th bowlers.

Bowling has 4 quicks (Donald, Steyn, Pollock & Procter) plus Kallis' medium pace and Faulkner's leg spin, giving 6 options.

Is it better to drop Faulkner and Pollock/Procter to bring in another proper bat (Amla, Mitchell) and Tayfield's leg spin?

SA ATG XI

1. Richards
2. Mitchell
3. Kallis
4. Pollock
5. Nourse
6. Faulkner
7. Waite
8. Procter
9. Steyn
10. Tayfield
11. Donald

Gutted to leave out Adcock and Herbie. Herbie was so gun in swinging and seaming conditions.

A South African XI looking like this would be so good, IMO:

1. Richards
2. Mitchell
3. Amla
4. Kallis
5. Pollock
6. de Villiers +
7. Faulkner
8. Procter
9. Pollock
10. Steyn
11. Donald

ABdV not an ATG 'keeper, obvs, but man that team would beat almost anything. 6 genuine bowling options and still bats to 9.

barry richards, lindsay and procter didnt play enough tests to warrant a place. not even 1000 runs/50 wickets. and, I think tayfield was an offie.

my SA XI

G. Smith
G. Kirsten
A. D. Nourse (jr)
G.A. Pollock
J.H. Kallis
AB de Villiers (wk)
G.A. Faulkner
S.M. Pollock
H.J. Tayfield
D. Steyn
A.A. Donald

Two express fast bowlers, absolute masters of their craft.
A fast medium master of swing and cut.
One of the greatest off spinners ever.
A leg spinning/googley bowling all-rounder
A fast medium pacer who can crank it up to fast mode and chip in with vital wickets bowling as sixth option.

No need to speak about the batting which is a perfect mix of caution and aggression/ left-right. and they bat very well way down to no.8. tough, tough team to beat.

Needs less Sehwag and Gilchrist and more Amla opening and De Villiers wicket keeping. De Villiers is like salt. Just improves everything.

can you really rely on ABdv to keep against that bowling attack of Warne, Steyn, Ambrose and McGrath
Yes. He keeps to Steyn already.

I thought about the Warne dynamic, and if it didn't work then you drop Warne for Murali. Warne is bloody lucky to get there ahead of Murali.

Funny thing, I don't disagree with the seam attack, but its interesting that there is no Akram, Younis or Donald.
