Ramesh didn't do too well against the competition since he was axed- first it was Jaffer, then Gambhir, then Jadhav. Jaffer had a more substantial record at that time and then dominated the FC scene in the 2001-02 season. Then came Gautam Gambhir, who was scoring more than a few against international FC/reserve teams, making his case stronger. Likewise, Chopra, who did enough to get his national cap, but a very disappointing 04-05 season, where he was upstaged even by a relative newcomer like Dheeraj Jadhav, suggested his chances of a comeback were nearly over. Maybe he could have pounced on that chance when the Indians were needlessly opening with Dravid, then half-baked wicketkeepers, but he couldn't add much value (and his footwork and technique, even against spin, were questionable, and he was also a weak fielder) to his place in the team, and eventually, the competition got ahead of him.
