I believe AB has said he doesn't want the gloves because he wants to become the world's best batsman!
Well that isn’t going to happen. He said he would take the gloves if given them, he just doesn’t want them but what he wants is irrelevant. South Africa can improve their top order ten fold by giving him the gloves and that’s what should happen.

Because his a troll. The England series last summer he came in for the first 3 days of the Lord's test, gave it the big I am but was never seen again. He made a comeback for the start of the Australian home series but again went MIA, was seen briefly during the David Warner games but unsurprisingly went missing during the ODI series.

Anyhow back to this game, Hughes is so good. His awful on the eye but two games in and he already looks like his been playing test cricket for years. Neil Mac just waiting for the declaration whilst Ntini and Morne are waiting to be dropped.
Which fast bowlers would replace Morkel and Ntini?

Or alternatively they might play Albertus in Cape Town and it in theory gives you something with bat and ball. AB has the gloves and the better Morkel gives you more depth in both disciplines. You could bring in Prince for Smith. McKenzie needs to go but you need a specialist opener to replace him which is hard with Smith out already.

Tsotsobe would be the natural choice but his injured so **** knows. There is a couple of kids with potential (Parnell, Alexander, de Villiers) but no one else looks to be test class and de Wet is just coming back from a serious injury.

Good thing for South Africa is that there next test series (I think) is a longtime away (England during the winter) so they have time to identify replacements. Tahir one assumes will come straight into the side for Harris, who has performed admirably but Tahir is the wicket taking spinner they need and he has a nice habit of making mince meat of the tail.

I think you're presuming he'd bat as well if he had to keep.

I don't think it's as simple as "He doesn't want to do it." They've probably had a discussion about it and decided the amount lost by his batting wouldn't be covered by whoever batted in his spot. Besides which, he's not really a top-shelf 'keeper anyway.

If de Villiers batted at #7 to accommodate Prince their batting would be stronger. With Smith out and McKenzie on the brink of banishment forever, their opening situation looks in big trouble. This may skittle such plans to move de Villiers to take the gloves. But I would think A.Morkel in for the third test might be ok. He seems to play cricket with a lot more competitiveness and passion than his giant sibling.

Neither is Prior, Haddin, Dhoni et cetera. He would do a job (a good one) and would bat at 7, so it’s not going to affect his batting because his coming in so low and he has a decent rep of batting well with the tail.

The guy South Africa is currently looking at (Daryn Smit) can’t bat (about as good as the Sri Lanka keeper) but he bowls decent leg-spin and AB will doubtlessly have to keep when Smit comes onto bowl.

What a mess that would be.

I haven't looked at his recent domestic first class form but is their any possibility at all that Johan Botha could be brought into the squad?

His leadership and lower order batting could be of some use. Doubt it will happen, just a thought. :)

All of them are better 'keepers than AB, though.

Don't mind Botha as a cricketer in the sense that I think he cops too much flack given his overall contribution, but he shouldn't play ahead of Harris or Tahir within the current context of the team. If Ntini and Morkel were more consistent you'd think about the extra batting someone like Botha could provide but they need another genuine bowler and he's not as good as the other two on bowling alone.

de Villiers has such great hand/eye coordination that a lot of keeping would be sure to bring him in line with the others. The downside would be that he would be missed in the field.

De Villiers is a much better keeper than Prior.
Not from what I've seen. At worst, they were on par, in my view. Not denigrating De Villiers, per se; he's just so good an athlete, he can do pretty much anything. But to be SA's regular 'keeper? Takes too much from one strong area to paper over another for mine.
