What's the matter with Watson's batting?

This promising cricketer has now had 3 ducks in a row opening. What's up with Watto?
Hahaha.. well mate this thread has all the makings to be an interesting one and at some point i guess Oram's name would also be thrown into the mix, anyways Watto is coming back after an injury so he might just be feeling his way back and secondly opening is not everyone's cup of tea and Watto might just be realising that.

Watson is ridiculously overrated. His batting is at best serviceable and in no way suited to opening. Has no chance of opening for Australia so what is the point of him doing it for QLD.

Seems to be one of those batsmen more worried about being technically correct than scoring runs. Bats like those little plastic figurines in the old Test Match board game and seems to only have one gear. I guess I'm saying he doesn't appear to have a very adaptable technique which could change depending on the circumstances.

Mind you, it seems to be mental rather than technical. I've seen him on a few occasions bat just hitting through the line, high front-arm, etc. when the situation is crying out for some innovative slogs such as in the last few overs of a ODI. Strikes me as one of those guys who all you'd have to do is cut off his scoring options and he won't adapt quickly enough to avoid getting out trying to slog himself out of a hole. His bowling is the same; has great pace but doesn't look threatening because he bowls similarly almost every ball.

That said, the above only makes him a very similar type of player to Jacques Kallis and I forsee similar selfishness accusations being thrown at him in the future. I guess he just needs to find his niche and some self-belief. Certainly has all the right raw materials to be a gun all-rounder or a top-6 Test batsman who bowls occasionally.

Watson is an over-rated myth. He's been the biggest non-event in Australian Sport for the last 10 years.

If Australia want an all-rounder they should look at Noffke and Gillespie long before Watson. Not to mention Hogg is very handy.

As for opening batsman. The depth is a bit thin at state level. Perhaps Hussey might have to open if and when Hayden calls it a day leaving the middle order open for the other Hussey.

Watson is a number four IMO and I'd have Mark Cosgrove open before Watson internationally though in saying that he did do well opening against us last year though it must be said that the attack was comprised of James Franklin who should be a test specialist, an out of form Daryl Tuffey and I think Michael Mason or Andre Adams.

I bet Fiery is just loving this.:p

Haha sheesh, so the guy has 3 failures coming back from Injury, and you're all on his back again. The guy could score a triple ton and I'm sure you would all find some reason to jump all over his back.

Only playing against an Under 9 side. Then he is only good enough as "orange boy"

Haha, is he "that" Matt? Dire, I lol'd at the thought of Gillespie playing as an allrounder tbh.
