Arnold to retire after World Cup

Couldn't have done it any later, IMO.

Has served Sri Lanka well. IMO, will always be remembered as the guy who was there and thereabouts , but never managed to live upto expectations or reach any significant potential he promised early in his career.

And I agree with Lostman - Dilshan has always been and always will be a better player than Arnold.

With regard to the question of spelling of his name by Richard and the answer by TT Boy,it has nothing to do with Scottish planters in SL.

Most people with Anglicised names or portugese or Dutch names(reflecting the three colonial rulers of Sri Lanka each for approximately 150 years at a time) in Sri Lanka have no heritage to those races nor do they have ancestry from those countries. They mostly adopted these names because it helped them get better employment or get them further than otherwise. And thats why possibly the misspelling.

Vaas however on the other hand does have some Dutch ancestry IIRC.

Um are you sure about that???

Absolutely ... Most people just adopted those names.... Not because they have English blood or Dutch blood or Portugese roots in them. The De Silva's, De Zoysa's , Fonsecas, Fernando's , the Van whatevers ..:) even the Mills, Edwards, Davids, Josephs etc..etc...
You name it .... As I said majority...ie 99.99% -There is a small number a very minute number who have it by ancestry ... but they are a very minute fraction.

I am certain Arnold has a lot to offer SL cricket after his retirement in other ways... I for one would love him to take up commentating (given his good cricket knowledge and command of the English language) - he would make a good commentator better than Ranjith U know Who. Other possibilities include cricket administration in the ICC following on from the likes of Ranjan Madugalle and Roshan Mahanama etc..or perhaps Cricket Umpiring..

Sorry to go off topic but how do we get a Jacob Martin or David Johns(t?)on play for India then?

How on earth is someone who doesnt even average 30, and whos recent record is equally dismal supposed to be better than Arnold? Dilshan has always had potential in test match cricket, and even there he hasnt exactly delivered, but in ODIs hes been nothing short of pathetic for years and hes played series after series for SL.

His strong technique has made him somewhat overrated IMO and plastered over his lack of runs.
A lot of it has to do with the fact that Dilshan can hit the ball, Arnold hardly can.

Never been a big fan for him, got a lot of not outs which boasted his average. Had a lot of potential at the start of his career, but never really showed what he was capable at international level. For majority of the start of his career people talked about him as the man to take over from Jayasuriya and Atapattu at the top of the order, but he retired before them.

I look at his retirement as a chance to get Chamara Kapugedera back in the side.

However ordinary Arnold may be compared to McGrath, he still deserved being mentioned during the Final Ceremony as one of the retirees.... But I was extremely disappointed that Tony Cozier of all people failed to make one mention of this guy while there were a hundred repetitive mentions of McGrath's retirement.....another indication of Cozier's failing memory perhaps.

One was a world-beater, an all time legend and winner.

The other won't even be remembered outside of his own town in 20 years...

Nonetheless all retirees who've done something of note - which Arnold undoubtedly has - deserve some sort of a mention.

It's hardly equality to completely exclude one and lavish the others.
