This is where an England A team would be useful, I mean then you could put him in the team and play him against a touring A Team, U-19 Teams and the Touring Test Team just to get an idea.

I don't know why ppl are concerned about having extreme pace bowlers.

Sure its good to have a 150k bowler but he's got to have accuracy & skill otherwise he'll just be a Heath Davis or Nanty Hayward & get smashed.

I'd swap a quick bowler anyday for a bowler of McGrath's speed who is accurate & never strays outside of off-stump.

I saw Dean bowl once, and he's tallish and is McGrathish...and he does the job every year so...

Dean is quite tall and I would definatly rate him as a better left-armer than Sidebottom. Also Sidebottom has not done much lately except grow his hair, and Dean's done as much as he can. At least he deserves a place in the squad.
Oh, you're talking about the OD squad now. I thought we were talking Tests. To be honest, I don't think it made a difference which they picked as neither will go, but in One Day games I must say Sidebottom impressed me last season at Lords.

Well, i just don't understand why the selectors are going for guys with extreme pace with high economies even in county cricket when there is this guy Kevin Dean averaging 22 with the ball at first class level who has incredible bowling stats.

Too many countries are getting caught up in this wave of wanting to have a young, exciting, quick bowler.
You can't just get one with the click of a finger, these guys don't come along every 2 years.
Dean should be in Australia.

Maybe we're taking this idea that if Australia are the best team in the world, all we have to do is copy them and we can be just as good, hence wicketkeepers get chosen on their ability with the bat, we need someone who can bowl 100mph, and a leg spinner.

I still think that having a specialist keeper who takes the really hard chances can make up for his batting.
If you have a keeper that only averages 20-25, but takes the very hard chances then its worth it.

Everybody wants a leg-spinner, a good one is really hard to find though & its not only England who are struggling for one.

I agree mostly, I was just saying maybe some people are trying too hard to replicate the Aussie formula, instead of coming up with a better or at least new and original one...?

Well he said it...go on Marc...you know you have to ;)
He's another one who's found the conditions in England suit his type of bowling - others have been tried and failed because County Cricket is not good enough - he will always be successful at County level because of that, but not at Test level where the players are better. Look at the last few seam bowlers debuted by England, and where they are now.

We had Russell averaging over 30, but he wasn't good enough if you believe the selectors!

Ok...lets pick one opening bowler and pick 5 Leg Spinners, play one of them and let Gough bowl in a wheel chair  sheesh I'm in an odd mood tonight :D

Well Harmison is in Australia. Jones is in hospital. Kirtley is in Australia. Sidebottom is in the hairdressers (hopefully)! Hoggard's done ok though.
