The fastest bowler you have ever faced?

Well, it's not called the "Twenty20 is Useless Society" or the "Twenty20 has no place in the game Society" - the name says it well really - it's boring. It could well bring people to the game, or promote the game to parts it would have little exposure to otherwise. It could also very well be great for domestic cricket and generate much-needed revenue for domestic sides that could possibly go into grass-roots development. However, it's still boring to watch IMO - and that's the point - not to debate it's importance or its role, but simply to question its entertainment value.

Anyway, there's a thread for it elsewhere, so I won't rant on forever.
What Twenty 20 does (definitely what it aims to do) is to bring to cricket those who dont like the game. Not in its normal formats at least. This attempt to bring to the game those who dont really love the game may not work sonce these new followers may get bored of this format too.

In any case what is ignored is that by trying to bring to the game those who dont like it at present we might be driving away those who love it so passionately already.

ICC has to decide what it wants in the long run for at some stage down the line it might be too late to do anything about it.

Faced some guy called Wayne in my one and only game for uni who must have been pushing 80mph. Took a bouncer to the chest that I didn't even see, and it ****ing hurt. I made 6 off 12 balls, then got out to another, much slower guy.

Also faced two guys bowling at about 75mph when I played against Portsmouth Grammar School in my last school match, they were pretty useful. I made 5 off 25 balls opening the batting. Epic, it was.

There are quite a few bowlers at my club who are of a decent pace. It makes for terrific practice in the nets. So when it comes to a saturday, i usually have my eye in.

Yes. Its great to have good fast bowlers in the nets. But it can be very frustrating if they stray all over the place. Good accurate fast bowling is superb to face for nets.

Well one of the lads i face, does spray it all over and his bouncer is lethal. Aparts from that the quicker bowlers help development ten fold

 Tim Groenewald.

A couple of mates of mine have faced Chris Tremlett... in front of a speedgun, so they knew how fast the balls they were getting were!

I nearly faced Chris Whelan of Middlesex but like all talented arrogant cricketers he ****ed off after he batted so i was left with the remnants of the 4th eleven bowling attack.

I don't think i've ever faced anyone that quick, all the pros at my club are batsmen an i don't play at a very high level.

The various bowlers I faced at the Auckland under-19 trials in the Eden Park indoor nets in April 2002.

It was the first trial (they obviously plan well in advance) for the 2002/03 team. I had just turned 17, so I was really an under 17s player, but off course all of the guys there were under 17s and under 18s planning for the season ahead. I didn't get invited back for the 2nd trial, unsurprisingly.

Anyway, one of the guys I faced, iirc, either made the NZ under-19 team for 2002/03, or had been in the NZ under-17 team for 2001/02, as a specialist bowler. Unfortunately I can't remember his name...he was quick by my standards, but I actually managed ok against him. However, one of the guys I faced was just much too quick for me- again I don't know who he was, all I can say is that from my observation he was the quickest bowler trialling for Auckland under-19s and clearly quicker than the guy who actually made NZ. He made me look like an idiot.

What I found was that all of the bowlers except for that one were quite fast and rather scary (again, by my standards)- but this one guy was just something else all together. The only way I can explain it is that, at his pace, the ball seemed to somehow disappear shortly after it left his hand, and then reappear in front of me (often in front of my face), as if it had somehow completely skipped the middle third of the pitch.

I can identify with that - similar sentiments when I played for Exeter Second XI. :shy:

Tomm do you play for Papplewick?
Afraid not pal, A string of injuries has really limited me playing in teams. I lived in Alfreton for a brief while, and played school cricket, but nothing more (Been up today to have a game with a few of the lads, had a blinding game!). Im more than content to smack a ball around in the backyard, or in the park somewhere.

Why do you ask?

Because a friend of mine (Phil Cooper) has just signed for Papplewick, so i wondered if you had chance to meet him?

Ah right, good for him. I never actually go and watch club cricket, because I live on Mansfield road and its on the very edge of Papplewick, so its not a case of just going down and watching.

As I've said before, I do alot of cricket in Alfreton (Just recreational) so it's never come up. I suppose I might just ahve to look out for him then

He's only 18, and plays for Notts 2nds. I've batted with him all through junior level, he is a qualtiy batsman.
