You can't have a "specialist captain", so until Mohammad Kaif can nail down a regular spot then I don't think he should even be considered by the BCCI.
Mike Brearley, under whom England won 21 Tests and lost just 6, would disagree strongly with that notion. Besides, surely Kaif can contribute more than Sachin Tendulkar. [/stir]
I feel it would be a big mistake to go back to Sourav Ganguly, he isn't really a long term option and although he was good in the past I think politics would all but rule him out of the job.
If India regain Ganguly as a captain, they lose him as a batsman. Simple as.
Ganguly the captain is essentially playing a specialist captain, in my mind. And I think Kaif would contribute more with the bat as captain than Ganguly would.

We can all post our opinions on this thread to who should be the next Indian captain, but no matter what we think Sachin Tendulkar would be the next Indian captain because he wants to give it a shot for a 3rd time (as captain) and thats the reason why he was made the vice-captain earlier.
I'm almost certain that Sachin Tendulkar was not named as vice-captain with view of giving him the captaincy in the future. Given that he was never a particularly good captain and is presently struggling to be a particularly good batsman, it would be the utmost of stupidity to make him captain.
When Sachin is interested to captain the side then i can't see many selectors even denying his wish either.
Apparently the BCCI is going to start taking the Australian route and picking players based on present capabilities, rather than past form and legacy. If that's actually the case, it doesn't matter what Tendulkar wants, he won't be named captain.

Sehwag is too inconsistent in the shorter version and a flat track bully in the longer version. While he has a good cricketing brain, he's not the man to lead a consistent, athletic side.
He's not been flash in the longer form of the game in recent times either.

He has had a specific problem with the incoming delivery, but I don't think he's a flat-track bully. He has scored runs against McGrath and Gillespie when the rest of team barely managed anything.

He's a shadow of the player he was back then though. He looks totally different and entirely incapable at times.

What about Kumble? Maybe just for tests. He certainly lifts when given responsibility. Give the ODI captaincy to one of the younger brigade to groom them for the tests.

Don't say that! Now the BCCI has no choice but to appoint Sachin..you see these guys are partial to words such phrases as "utmost stupidity".
Anyway, I agree with Dasa,
Agarkar
Dravid. He hasn't done too badly and there isn't a decent candidate around. In the future if Kaif can prove that he can bat, he might be worth a shot...

Completely agreed. I never disputed that. I'm just saying that IMO, he wasn't a FTB in the past. Regarding his problems I think they're largely mental because when he was playing well the strongest suit of his game was his temperament and shot-selection. He was really good at leaving the good ones and pouncing anything in his areas (In tests). That mental part of his game has gone haywire he doesnt have a clue these days.

But we all know Kaif can bat. The question is, can he score runs?

Only way to find out is to give him a prolonged run in tests say around 6-8 tests and see how he goes....if he comes up with the goods after that, he needs to be retained and not dumped as he has been in the past...

Kaif may not be the most talented player in India but he has a great work ethic and is good under pressure unlike a lot of other batsmen.
I think he can do well if he';s given the right backing - there is evidence to suggest that.

Yeah I don't think Sehwag is a flat track bully either (well, at least not to the extent that he is being made out to) - he made a hundred on a seaming Trent Bridge wicket in 2002 and grabbed a couple of hundreds in those garden like wickets in New Zealand (where noone else did)

Bu as long as his shot selection is so dire, he's only ever likely to score runs on flat wickets. As such, he's presently a flat track bully.

So you advocate the selection of a 36-year-old who is captaining brilliantly in Indian domestic cricket, huh?
Besides, surely Kaif can contribute more than Sachin Tendulkar. [/stir]
Gotta somewhat doubt that, TBH.

Could such a thing not be said of a certain chap whose middle-name is Charles?

The dropped catches just haven't been coming of late...
