How many of these players would have played one day cricket for England

(admittedly they chose a specialist wicketkeeper in Ian Gould, though I still don't know why they didn't choose David Bairstow).

a lot of those players are what I would classify as county plodders, ie. perfectly serviceable county champ pros who simply wouldnt have the talent to perform anywhere near the standard required at international level....although I dont know who John Whitehouse or John Rice were

Exactly...this is sort of player who England have chosen in recent years, eg Solanki, Matthew Flemming, Vince Wells etc who are nowhere near good enough for International Cricket.
