"The Cricketer" 75th Anniversary 1st XIs

    I just found this recently.

My apologies if it's been posted before.

In the 75th anniversary year of 'The Cricketer' (1996), leading test cricketers were asked to select the best cricketing elevens from their countries.

    The selectors:

    Australia -- Richie Benaud
    England -- Denis Compton
    South Africa -- Barry Richards
    West Indies -- Garfield Sobers
    India -- Sunil Gavaskar
    Pakistan -- Hanif Mohammad
    Sri Lanka -- Sidath Wettimuny
    New Zealand -- Richard Hadlee

I assume their selections cover the 75 years from 1921-1996.

(Apologies for any typos, this is cut and paste stuff.)

Swap Hayden for Taylor and Gilchrist for Tallon (although Tallon would be a better keeper) and you've got one hell of a team.
(And for those of you wondering 'ONE FAST BOWLER?!?!?!!!?!?!?! LOLZZZ' be assured that either Miller or Lindwall could open the bowling on a whim )

Thanks for that. I was surprised that some players picked themselves, but Gavaskar did not choose one of the great Indians openers
    You know it makes sense.

"I was surprised that some players picked themselves.."
Well it would be rather ridiculous if Sobers and Hadlee didn't pick themselves. And frankly it was a bit silly of Gavaskar not to pick himself and send Tendulkar in to open! In the case of Benaud however it was reasonable to select O'Reilly and Warne of ahead of himself though his batting definitely makes him a contender as well. However I must say I am surprised to see Compton picking himself ahead of the likes of Walter Hammond

    Pakistan should be,

    Hanif Mohd
Saeed Anwar instead of Aamir Sohail
    Zaheer Abbas
    Javed Miandad
    Inzamam instead of Asif Iqbal
    Imran Khan (C)
    W Bari (Wk)
    W Akram
    Abdul Qadir
    Waqar Younis
Shoaib Akhtar instead of Iqbal Qasim
Majid Khan instead of Shoaib Mohammad as the 12th man.

SL would probably look something like:

    Jayasuria for Anura Pb Tennekoon
    Attapatu for S Wettimuny
    Kumar Sangakara
    Arvinda De Silva
    Arjun Ranatunga
    Duleep Mendis
    Michael Tisserra
    Kumar Dharmasena instead of Gonatillake
    Chaminda Vaas
Muralitharan instead of Ajith De Silva
    Asantha De Mail
