Substitute fielders in tests

England have clearly been pushing the boundaries abit bringing in specialist fielders and rotating their fast bowlers through 'toilet breaks' its about time the umpires clamped down on this before it starts getting worse or more widespread for mine.

I think it is a bit unfair, although it is within the rules. But it would be a bit hard to regulate, what are you going to say, "You can't substitute a player with a good fielder"?

I think the biggest thing that Aus will take out of this series is not having their official 12th man at the ground, and let him go and play FC cricket so we don't get another Brett Lee situation.

RE: the actual substitutions, it is a bit disappointing but someone should have made a bigger deal of it earlier. Ponting's outburst made all the more embarrassing by the fact that Jones had a legitimate injury.

Wonder whether Ponting was annoyed because it wasn't actually the 12th man fielding?

to be honest England seem very hell bent on winning they're forgetting some of the common courtesy's of the game. It's very hard to do anything about it because they're not breaking the rules however they are pushing them. Their decision to not take oppositions players word for catches and their decision to play very good fielders as 12th men I don't really think is in the spirit of the game.

Should we just rename this thread the "Australia - Best Producers of Sour Grapes since August 2005"?

While that may be true, I think the Aussies pick the 12th best player for the reason he deserves to be paid as much as the rest of the team (which IIRC he does).

It isn't within the rules though. It's fine to replace an injured fielder with someone good, but if they go off to go to the toilet or change gear, they aren't allowed a sub.

Anyway, as mentioned, Ponting and Buchanan should have done something about it earlier.

Does Pratt (the replacement 12th man) get the cash, or does Tremlett?

exactly the idea of a 12th man is to have the next man in line there, not have about 5 different freak fielders that you can call upon. It is a huge disadvantage to the visiting side as they don't have the same peronnel to call upon as the home team for specialist fielding 12th men.

I think only the 12th man should be able to come on. Also, England's use of subs has become annoying and unsportsmanlike in a way. It is an eleven man game

The law is very clear regarding substitute fielders. There is a lag in application of it. Players usually keep going off the field without a lot of apparent reason.
