Looking at this series it is very obvious too me that Warne should be captain of right now but obviously that is not the case and he almost certainly will never be which is a great shame for him and australia. Ponting has been outclassed by vaughan and isnt a great captain but he cant really be blamed for australias poor performance

in essence isnt that what people have been saying ever since ponting has taken over? One wonders how long it will be before the english captain attains the same tag due to the vast amount of talent present within the english team.

I'm sure your monkey could - he's super.

I think if we enjoy 10 years at the top, then that's when you can start making such statements. At the moment, it's 1-1 with 8 days of cricket to decide the Ashes.

In defence of Ponting, he really hasn't had a lot of breaks what with the entire batting line-up apart from himself and the bowlers going AWOL for most of the summer.

i may be a little high at the moment but nooooo way Australia should change their captain, he defiantely isn't the best option available but no one else is suitable for the job. People keep saying that Ponting's has looked clueless in this series but i've seem him consult with Warne, Gilchrist when setting fields, making bowling changes etc & still England have been on top.

Since Ponting has become international skipper in 2002 i've seen him make some superb decisions & some ordinary ones but he isn't that bad that he is worth replacing.......

Regardless of whether he stays as captain or not (I think he should stay due to lack of replacements) if Australia lose this series, he will always be remembered, perhaps unfairly, as 'the guy who lost The Ashes'. They'll remember how he was an excellent batsman too, but Australia have had many excellent batsman over the last 15 years. Only one can be the first guy to lose to the Poms.

well i'm hoping that wont happen in this seires but Ponting eventually by 2009 will be the one to face the ignominity of being the one lose the ashes to England .

While Vaughan will be the one the retains the ashes

I am picking Gilchrist to retire in the next year so I would advise not giving Gilchrist the captaincy.

If, heaven forbid, Australia do not retain the Ashes, I reckon about 4 of them might chuck it in within a month of getting home.

Ponting hasnt shown signs of being the world's best captain nor has he shown any of being the world's worst. Australia may or may not have a better captaiin in their midst.

The Australian team's woes, however, are not due to his captaincy. There isnt much a captain can do for poor batting all round or age catching up with main bowlers.

When Ponting came into the position he inherited a very good time, but at the same time a very old team (age wise), in comparison to the rest of the world. In his time in the position the injuries have been accumulating and have begun to occur to some of the genius' of the team.

INdeed he did lead from front in one innings, but on the field he seems to be clueless!!

Sack him as captain and get a maverick like Warney skip the side.
