Clarke called up for England

The ultimate sign of Surrey-bias?

An All-rounder who concedes 5.5 runs an over, can't be trusted to bowl even 5 overs a game, and averages mid 20's.

For a moment I thought I was talking about Tudor there,

What exactly is the reason for this "Surrey bias" that you guys have been talking about?

Is Surrey traditionally the strongest county in county cricket? I used to follow English county cricket when I was in college(well, the scores, anyway) and I didn't think that was the case.

Are a lot of the selectors from Surrey or is Graveney from Surrey?

Is there some strange tradition that makes them pick the most number of players from Surrey? I mean, LE mentioned that he has been noticing this for over 20 years now.

It's just one of those things - there are no reasons for it at all.

Surrey have been very strong for any number of years and there is no doubt that many of their players have deserved England recognition.

But..... I'll try and make some sense of the business :

Historically, England team selection has revolved around the 'test counties' with the southern pair (Middlesex and Surrey) holding sway in the last decade, although England's seam attack is more and more Yorkshire-based this season. It's just a bit of 'capital city' bias, possibly. I think that if they could stage a test match at Chelmsford or Romford they would just to bring Essex into the 'club'.

Some Londoners think that Oxford is in the north because it is more than 30 miles from the capital. As for Derbyshire, Notts, Leicestershire, Northants etc, well, they are perceived as being close to the arctic circle.

Civilisation tends to start again when you reach Lancashire and Yorkshire, but peters out just the south side of the Durham border.

I'm possibly being totally unfair, because several of the 'outside London' southern counties are also visibly hard done to with respect to test players.

The bias is in all likelihood just down to media reporting. Most of the London-based hacks I have come across get a nosebleed when they travel more than 5 miles from the Groucho Club, so it's really a publicity thing - free PR.

One example - a couple of weeks ago, Derbyshire gave Middlesex a good seeing-to. The next day, the newspaper I read (published in London) was more full of praise for Phil Tufnell's heroics in holding out for an hour and a half in a last wicket partnership than anything else. It could have hardly been more biased if they had spent the whole 6 column inches on Tuffers and then just put a footnote in "Oh, yes, Derbyshire won by 250 runs due to some filthy slogging and the odd jammy wicket" or something.

It's also possible that us from 'oop north' are just a bunch of bitter, twisted oiks (well, I am anyway). 8D

Imagine Clark and Hoggard bowling the opening overs for Eng, by the tenth over, the opposition will reach a total near 120 :cheesy:

Good move by England selectors

I'd like to see Darren Maddy get another crack.. but Ealham is a specialist ODI-keep-the-runs-down guy.

Hey leave Ealham alone it's not his fought he had to bowl to the likes of Gilly in the Natwest comp last year and got smacked big time... A few months previous the fans were all over him for taking 5-15 of 10 overs.

And his in super form at the momment in the County/NUL games... Lots of wickets and runs

His in that good of form he was beening tipped to take Flintoff's place in the test team :P

At least someone recognises my intelligence Eddie!

Actually I don't like Gladys following the 1993 3rd Round Knock-out game, where Warwickshire beat Yorkshire.

4 times I asked him for his autograph - each time he said (in his West Indian Accent) "Later".

He never did sign.

And, Rich, you should realise that not playing for Surrey, Ealham should have taken 5-0 off his 10 overs to be retained!

Surrey win English county championship title

LONDON, (AFP) - Surrey won the English county championship Division One title on Saturday despite not being in action. Nearest challengers Warwickshire's failure to secure maximum batting points in their drawn game with Lancashire at Old Trafford ended their challenge, while third-placed Kent were denied the win they needed as they drew with Somerset at Taunton.
It is Surrey's third title in four years in the domestic four-day game.

Checking up on the history, their record i think is very impressive. Picking players from a side that has a habbit of winning wont be a bad idea.....but ofcourse you guyz upthere know better ?

lol...yeah my point exactly :D:D

Naah just kidding, i wasn't out there to prove that u ppl are moaning or anything, just trying to see a reason for the bias or for that matter a justification for it.

For the moment though i'll leave you guys to ur moaning ;)

There's been many occasions whereby an inferior player for Surrey has been selected as supposed to better players - Ian Ward, Mark Ramprakash(!), Alex Tudor, Ian Salisbury, Ali Brown, Rikki Clarke and even the Hollioake brothers to an extent.

Why do Surrey win the title?

Oval (Spinning Pitch) + Saqlain Mushtaq + English Batsmen Can't Play Spin.

English Batsmen Can't Play Spin.
From being a weekness, this has turned into a tragedy.

Spinners no matter what creed or class (specially the ones in England) can be played or atleast negotiated quite well by putting your feet to good work. This reluctance to do so has been lethargic on the part of the English Batsmen to say the least.

The point i am making is, that this has gone on for too long surely England should be able to overcome it ?

Also the pitches at the Oval are super for batting on (current test match shows this (Dravid 217/Vaughan 195 and endless 50's) So players will always appear to be better batsman than they are.

Also Surrey have money and money talks. If you notice anybody that gets picked for England ends up at Surrey (J.Ormord & E.Giddens) both were in the Test team this time last year. Likewise if a player is out of form they move to Surrey to enhance there international chances (Ramps)
