full substitutes and the power play overs - did it fly ?

Recently the Natwest Challenge tried these new rules out. Even before trying there was a flurry of comments and strong opinions. Did it Fly ??

i'm sure quite a few members would agree with me here when i say that they would be decent ideas with a few changes, eg the supersub being nominated after the toss rather than beforehand.

It was a qualified success - a bit like the curate's egg - good in parts.

As far as any captain winning the toss is concerned, the substitution rule is a godsend - it takes all decisions out of his hands. Win the toss, field. Job done.

The 'power play' is fascinating, but again it could be made so much better. Why should the decision be the fielding captain's to decide when it would be best for him to call the 5-over restriction at a time when he can minimise damage? Let the batting captain choose one for a period when he can maximise damage.

Better still, the side winning the toss ought to have to choose what they want -
    a) substitute
    b) bat or field

a bit like the football captain choosing whether he wants to kick off or which way they want to play - not both (yes, it means that one side effectively gets 12 men against 11 - but that's what happens now anyway).

and then both sides have to choose a 5-over power play to suit them.

I like the idea with substitutes but I'm absolutely no fan whatsoever of the batting side choosing a Powerplay. Bowling is difficult enough already.
If the batting captain can choose a Powerplay, the fielding captain has to have the authority to substitute a batsman.

    it didnt quite work imo.

the powerplays should be made into something more dramatic and important...lol dont ask me how.

+ i think its plain for everyone 2 see that supersubs must be named after the toss....otherwise an unfair formula will be employed for all eternity.

    -----

the supersub change is interesting...perhaps a cricket game with specialist bat and field teams will be played soon.

TBH, I didn't agree with either of the changes when they were brought in and still don't. Powerplays should be scraped completely, if fielding restrictions were to change, possible extending the first 15 over restrictions to 20 would be the way to go IMO. Substitutes before the toss obviously can have an advantage or can act as a pointless extra (in the form of Solanki with England batting first) - I'd have the substitute named after the toss so the player's speciality can actually be used on all occasions.

I'd rather they take out the super sub rule, since each team will most likely have a batsmen as the sub and it will take longer for teams to bowl each other out..

Powerplays however should stay, 10overs first up then 1 in which the batting team can choose and 1 in which the fielding team can.

Interesting that the changes met almost total condemnation from the cricketing world... Which of course gives the ICC the perfect excuse to cover themselves up and carry on with it

Generally, on this board at least, it was condemned before and after.
Of course, don't judge it on a single series, but 9 months is way too long.
Quite agree with Rich that ICC are likely to carry-on with the thing even in what I reckon is fairly likely event that it isn't enjoyed.

I think the substitution and power play rules have been introduced just for the americanisation of cricket.

a more effective powerplay would be to have 8 or 9 fielders on the field for the period of 5 over intervals, with no fielding restrictions, thus putting more gaps in the field and allowing batsman to be alot more daring

will also give inzy a good rest
