I know some question his technique but he looks so much more at home at test level than Harris.

If we're going to drop Burns it should be for both Bancroft and Warner. Because he absolutely should be there ahead of Harris, who seems to have massive flaws in his game.
not really tbh

Still more or less on the fence about Burns v Harris, a lot will depend on their respective form between now and then. Would agree Burns has been given a bit of a run around by selectors at times, but that in of itself isn't really a very convincing argument.

If the selectors were picking a squad just to make up for past decisions, then Callum Ferguson would absolutely be on the plane.

Put it this way - when was the last time that county cricket formed a major factor in Australian team selection?

Never. It's a poor competition compared to the shield or tests. Burns could get a duck in every innings in England and he should still play.

I still tend to believe the Shield is stronger than County Cricket, but by much less of a margin than 20-25 years ago

Yeah they're drawing closer in equality mainly due to the shabby treatment of the comp by CA. Still good county form and form over the last few rounds (how many rounds were the Dukes used in?) of the Shield should update have a fair bit of weight.

Yeah Shield is clearly stronger than county cricket, it's the top 66 (theoretically) players in a country vs the top 170-odd (?) if you factor in overseas players. It's still not really relevant to the discussion though.

Well to be fair it's from a bigger pool of players. England has over 2.5x the population of Australia.

Nevertheless, Stephen's point fails since Harris dominated Shield and tonned up in the final.

Yeah this is just plain stupid.

But Harris was given a run at test level - 6 home tests against subcontinent sides and looked painfully mediocre. Vulnerable to the short ball, he's done his dash.

Burns has a better test record than him despite his mistreatment. Harris, at the top of his game domestically has been poor in the most favourable conditions he'll get. He's a Ramprakash. Drop him and pick the batsmen.

But mostly because it's Stephen's
He did the same thing with Renshaw not long ago. Kept going on about how "crazy" it was that Renshaw wasn't picked for the Ashes, even though he was clearly in atrocious form and couldn't even get into double figures in the Shield that summer.

Stephen just loses all logic and common sense when it comes to Queensland players

And Bancroft turned out to be amazing didn't he?

Renshaw went on to score like 3 tons and win a shield final while Bancroft was busy scoring 10s and 20s in tests.

A big part of the reason the 90s-00s team was so good was that Australia kept picking players even when their form dipped a bit. We'd never have won in the West Indies in 95 if they'd dropped Steve Waugh any time someone made a hundred against NSW in the shield.

But that's what's happening now. The Finch selection for the first few tests was the pinnacle of woeful but there has been some consistently bad decision making and knee jerk reactions over the last 12 months.

County should mean nothing, especially since the majority of it between now and the ashes is one day stuff.
Actually there'll be 8-9 county games between 14 May and 21 July for the Aussies to get a decent hit before the Test squad is selected
