I agree entirely, it would be an absolute travesty if panesar didn't play. If we must use 5 bowlers then two spinners seems the best option, in my opinion neither mahmood or anderson have the consistancy to really trouble the aussie top 6.
nice to see we only gave monty 3 overs against pmx1 and gilo got 8, what a joke!

How on earth can they leave out the two best English players over the summer, Bell and Panesar, with justification? I hate Fletcher's guts.

This is what England XI should look like

1) Trescothick
2) Strauss
3) Cook
4) Pietersen
5) Bell
6) Flintoff
7) Read
8) Mahmood
9) Hoggard
10 Harmison
11) Panesar

Like has been said before Fletcher is messing about with the team to accomodate a not 100% fit Flintoff. I just prey he see's sense and plays Monty. It would be really harsh to drop bell but i can see it coming. hope i'm wrong.

Not it shouldn't. Mahmood needs to be trapped in a box and mailed to Swaziland ASAP.

i suspect this indeed will be the england team for the first test after listening to the Fletcher interview it seems certain colly and bell are fighting for one place and giles will play if definitely fit as fletcher is obsessed with his batting at no.8 despite Monty being a millions times the better bowler.
I get the impression Bell will play instead of Collingwood and I doubt Mahmood will play - personally I would select James Anderson instead, or would even push for both spinners to play.

Interesting to note that the last time England beat Australia at the 'Gabba was when they played 2 spinners.

I know I could be accused of reading too much into a single day's cricket, but I think today's matches resulted in the following for the start of the 1st Test:

- Langer will be feeling as though he needs a score.
- Giles will play, while Panesar will not.
- Johnson will at least be in the 12.

Sky sports are reporting that Duncan Fletcher has confirmed that Jones wil be selected for the 1st test. I think Jones might have a decent tour with the bat but will no doubt drop a few clangers.

Shattered I don't have a betfair account, and bet365 weren't holding a "which keeper to play the first test for England" bet, because a few weeks back Geraint was paying really well and some of my mates got on that bet. Looks almost certain now.

well fletcher in his interview on sky said that England are likely to play 2 spinners in most of the test, along with others hints that Jones will start, so based on that it seems England may look like this:

Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
KP
Colly/Bell
Flintoff
Jones
Giles
Hoggard
Harmison
Panesar

There is zero chance of England playing both Panesar and Giles at the Gabba.
