Cush Hero Yet Again
Batting Line-up Does Look Fragile

In tonight's rather one-sided encounter at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Karnataka revived their title chase in the incredibly tight one-day WCC premier league. With superior net run-rate, all our beloved Karnatakans need to do is to win at least three of their four remaining games, and the title might well be theirs - because in this game, everyone beats everyone. It was Khalid Ali and Aditya Jones who opened with some tight bowling, without really grabbing the breakthrough. Guyanese spinner Lennox Cush came on as first change and proved his worth immediately, bowling star opening batsman Allen for a subdued 11. Dawson and Midlane built a solid partnership for the second wicket, but when Jaminda Sigera had Midlane caught at midwicket for 43, the house of cards fell apart. Nine wickets fell for 60 runs as no batsman made more than New Zealand Shane Bond, and Lennox Cush wrapped up the tail with three wickets for two runs in his final over, ending with figures of four for 30.

A target of 124 was always going to be easy meat, and Abhijit Kale showed a welcome return to form with a stroke-filled 58 that steadied the ship when Eddie Howarth left for his third successive below-5 score. Despite the South Australians taking wickets at a regular rate, the Indians sailed to the target with half the overs and six wickets to spare, and now face rock-bottom Yorkshire in the next round. They're not to be snuffed at, though - Darren Gough's five-wicket-haul and general economical bowling helped them stop Lancashire on their way to a win in the last round, and they've got some fearsome batsmen. Their line-up does look rather thin compared to Kale, Borde, Maxwell, Keegan et al, and the weight of the Karnatakan bowling line-up should swing this one Karnataka's way.

Worcestershire have followed up their most embarrassing defeat of the season, with their most impressive win.

"I don't know what to say", said manager Thierry Henry, after Worcester's 87 run upset win over Hampshire. "I have no idea why we played so well. After losing to Glamorgan in the 4-dayers last week, the whole squad seemed demoralised. Then they go out and put in a performance like that. Well, at least things are getting a bit exciting in the 1-dayers, but I'd love some of this form in the longer game".

Worcester got off to the worst possible start with Ulysses Lowe finally dismissed by Gamage for a ponderous 17-ball duck. It was to be the first of 8 ducks, including 4 golden ducks, in a bizarre match, although those capitulations were the last thing on anyones mind when Akhil, with his first decent innings of the season, and Andrews, in a rich vein of form, put on 98 for the 2nd wicket, Akhil's 60 coming off just 58 balls. Dilshan then joined Andrews in another profitable partnership. While Andrews anchored the innings well, he did score slowly, and perhaps this explains the panic in the Worcester batting line-up that led to an amazing collapse in the last few overs, with the last wicket falling on the last ball of the 50th over. Andrews was eventually run-out for 102, one of three run-outs in the innings, as Worcester lost their last 5 wickets for 5 runs and made the useful score of 232. The extent of the collapse is evident in the fact that Righton, batting at no.8, ended up not out without facing a ball. The Hampshire bowlers shared the wickets around.

Hampshire started off by continuing the lunacy of Worcester's innings, when Halsted was run-out off the first ball of the innings. Iqbal and Crawley took the score to 66 with some explosive batting, but it was all down hill from there. Jones, who had come in for some fearful treatment from Crawley, picked up 2 quick wickets, as did Righton. Apart from some resistance from Ul-Hasan with 18, and Pollard's defiant 45 not out, there wasn't much from Hampshire, as Cunningham and Hall then took 2 wickets each, wrapping up the Hampshire innings for 145. It was another heroic effort from Worcester's bowlers in the OD arena, having famously knocked over Mumbai for 78 a fortnight ago, defending a paltry tally of 102.

Guyana Crush Karachi Again With Team Effort

Guyana replicated their round one victory over Karachi with a very similar and clinical performance on the weekend. Guyana won the toss and captain Martin Love elected to bowl. Lawson had Karachi on the back foot early with the early wickets of Baig and Singh. Once Lawson had done the early work, Ardley and Swanton never let the middle order get settled and reduced Karachi to 7-112. By then the damage had been done and Karachi were all out for 124.

Guyana were never in trouble chacing such a megre total. Ardley was run out early, but that was the only hic-up with Francis and Jenkins guiding Guyana home with 29 overs to spare. Jenkins brought up the winning runs with a towering six off Mishra to Give Guyana the outright lead on the Division 5 One Day table.

Guyana now face the tough task in taking on fellow West Indian rivals Jamaica in round 6 of the first class competition.

Karachi 123

Gambhir 24 (29)
Dharmani 24 (34)
Ardley 4-33 (9)
Swanton 3-32 (8)

Guyana 1-131

Francis 52* (72)
Jenkins 48 (44)

Somerset have taken home a thriller this weekend, winning by 2 runs over an unlucky Glamorgan. Somerset tweaker Kaneria was the hero, taking 7 wickets.

After being bowled out for a mere 123, with only Rayadu playing well for 64, Somerset bowled their opposition out for 121. At one stage 6/121, Glamorgan needed 3 to win with 4 wickets remaining. But Kaneria proved the difference, taking 4/0 in surely one of the most unprobable victories in WCC history.
