Virender Sehwag vs Graham Thorpe

Who was the better test batsman?

Early prediction (I'm gonna start doing this)

Sehwag 17-3 Thorpe.

Edit: that's an ambitious turnout prediction. We're in an era of daily comparison posts and some of them have been quite chaotic which probably dilutes the turnouts for individual polls. I also think everyone knows who's winning this one so some won't bother voting.

Who do you rate higher?

Agree. And one of the 3 to be one of more of Adorable Asshole, shortpitched, subshakerz, kyear. 😀
I'm relieved BazBall21 didn't get a mention because worried he's getting a reputation for resembling an old England propogandist. Would be disappointed if my man Subs votes for Sehwag.

I suspect Sehwag would still beat Gooch or Gower but at least one of those two might give Sehwag a game. This is just a dead-cert blow out haha.

Sehwag a more exciting, destructive, explosive and mercurial player. But I would rather have Thorpe in my side in most pressure situations tbh.

Was waiting for the troll part of the post and it never came.

Was the absence of a troll actually the troll?

My bad.

Sehwag could never get the job done against England and Bangladesh. Pretty poor average against Australia as well. clearly a very weak man. Just gorged himself on flat pitches against crap opposition like Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Oh, and he was a chucker.

Definitely not a "troll" post. Not necessarily saying Thorpe is better as Sehwag is infinitely superior at going big but Thorpe has a much better cross-conditions resume. He has tough hundreds in England, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and the Caribbean while Sehwag was a failure in the places where the ball moves laterally and has a mediocre overall record outside Asia. This plus point for Thorpe is admittedly skewed a fair bit by Sehwag's opener tax but voting Thorpe is not irrational by any means.

Not a troll post.
Yeah but it was made by sledger so that doesn't make any sense. Voting for Thorpe is fine but sledger is inherently a troll in this area of the forum.

I think Sehwag is over-rated here because people give him extra points for strike rate, but also under-rated here because people apply an analysis by checklist filter. Overall I think he's probably marginally over-rated but it's probably a wash.

I wish Thorpe's career was a little longer.

Thorpe absolutely fantastically good between his return in 2003 and his retirement tbh. Bloke was averaging nearly 60.

Suspect his pre-return average would also have been a lot higher if he hadn't been dogged by what sounded like pretty severe mental health issues for much of his England career up to that point too tbh.

I mean it was mostly a troll.

Watching cricket growing up (yes there were days when I actually watched) Sehwag was one of the players I always looked forward to seeing the most when India toured. But the reality was usually massively disappointing.

We didn't really get to see much of players who didn't either play for/against England in those days, but you would often see newspaper write ups and similar about how destructive and awesome Sehwag was.

But then he'd show up and get out to someone like Ryan Sidebottom.
