Both, strangely, were better as openers than in the middle order.
I don't know if it applies to these 2 but some batsmen can get very anxious, restless or loaded up on nervous energy waiting in the dressing room, so do much better opening.
Vaughans decline and move to the middle/number 3 is probably more related to his captaincy role.
