Yeah I'm not big on either but Trott's record is definitely inflated by only really playing through his peak. He was a good but not outstanding county cricketer for a while before debut and then retired relatively early as well. Both hit similar peaks IMO, but if Trott he was playing Tests from 23 to 38 as Ross was his average would look much poorer.

ATG (Bradman/Hadlee etc)
Great for their era (Chanderpaul/Philander)
Very Good
Good/Test Class
Decent
Spud

I think Taylor in ODI would be a great for his era, and in Tests would probably bob around very good, at times touching great for his era but the majority of his career being lower than that. Trott had a pretty short career basically entirely in that tier but you'd suspect he'd have ended up in good to very good.
