The Reshaping of Glamorgan (ICC3 story)

Graham

3rd Umpire
Glamorgan 2007

I chose Glamorgan because at first glance, they appear to be the weakest team and I like that challenge! 8-)

I will use the same criteria for selecting players that I do in my other stories:
- no players over the age of 34
- no very defensive batsmen

This means that three of the better players under contract cannot be used - Australian opener Matthew Elliott, batsman David Hemp and allrounder Robert Croft.

Due to handicapping myself in this manner, I started the season by waiting until there were some good youth players available to sign.
This is the one and only season for which I will resort to this.
My story will be "honest" in all regards from the first match on and through subsequent seasons.

The Glamorgan squad for 2007 will be announced soon. :)

3rd Umpire
Glamorgan Squad 2007

Batsmen

James Maher (33)
The one overseas player that we'll be using. James is an Australian opening batsman with a FC average of 41 and an OD average of 40. We'll be expecting big things from him.

Michael Powell (30)
Michael will be our captain for the season. He's a fine opening batsman with a FC average of 40 and an OD average of 28.

Daniel Cherry (27)
Daniel is unlikely to get too many games as a backup opening batsman.
With a FC average of 28 and a disappointing OD average of 16, Daniel has failed to fulfill the promise shown before he gained a contract with us.
An added string his bow is that he looks like he could be useful with his part time medium paced deliveries.

Ben Wright (19)
Ben is in his second season with us, but had limited opportunities last season.
He came into the side late in the piece, scoring 72 in his one FC innings and 37 in his one OD innings.
He has a big responsibility to shoulder this season in our top order.

Wayne Eyre (20)
Wayne was suggested to us as an exceptional talent, having averaged over 50 at youth level. We snapped him up as one of our youth signings and are hoping that he can deliver the goods for us in his debut season.

Stuart Fowler (21)
Stuart is another of our youth signings. He too was averaging over 50 at youth team level, and we were very fortunate to gain his services in addition to Wayne's.

Mark Wallace (25)
Mark is one of the two keepers in the squad, but has yet to establish himself in the number one position.
He has a solid FC average of 28, but a disappointing OD average of 16.

Nicky Peng (24)
Nicky had big wraps on him as a youngster, but has not lived up to those expectations.
However, despite a FC average of 24 and an OD average of 25, he's expected to be a regular for us this season.
In practice, he's shown some ability with the ball, so his offspin could yet see him regarded as an allrounder.

William Bragg (20)
William is the second keeper in our squad, but has shown enough promise in training to be given a start ahead of Mark Wallace initially. Whether or not he can keep Mark out of the side will depend on his performances.

Ryan Watkins (23)
With a FC average of 21 and an OD average of 13, Ryan has a huge task ahead of him if he's to retain a contract with us in the long term.

Gareth Rees (22)
Gareth has only had a small handful of games for us to date, so not too much can be read into his current FC average of 21 and OD average of 13.
Could this be the season that makes or breaks his career as a batsman?

Richard Grant (22)
Richard is another young batsman yet to perform well at this level. His FC average is just 18 and his OD average 21.
Along with both Ryan Watkins and Gareth Rees, he must take full advantage of any opportunities that arise to secure a future with us.

Bowlers

Steven Clark (24)
All the big guns were after this more than useful RMF bowler, but we managed to entice him to come to us under a three year contract!
Steven has an impressive FC bowling average of 25, but is unproven in ODs.
He will be the lynchpin of what was otherwise looking a pretty ordinary bowling attack for us.
Steven is also a useful tailender with the bat.

Simon Jones (28)
This RF bowler is England contracted, but I can't see him being unavailable for us very often, as he seems to be well down in the pecking order of their pace bowling stocks.
Simon has a useful FC bowling average of 32, but his OD average of 47 leaves a lot to be desired.

Huw Waters (20)
Huw shows a lot of promise as a RMF bowler and is a vital part of my plans. Along with Steven Clark and Simon Jones, he makes up a pace trio that should be able to hold their own with most teams.
Huw's FC bowling average is 31, but he is unproven in ODs.

David Harrison (25)
David is another RMF bowler. Although he has a FC bowling average of 36, David will be of most value in the OD games with an average of 27 and a good economy rate.
He is also a useful tailend batsman.

Alexander Wharf (31)
Alexander is yet another of our RMF pool. He has a FC average of 37 and an OD average of 30. Unlikely to get too many games, he is a useful backup bowler to have, especially with the added bonus of his batting.

Andrew Davies (30)
Andrew is a RM bowler whose main asset is in the OD form of the game.
His FC average is 43 and his OD average is 26.

Richard Knowles (22)
Richard was the last of our youth signings. He is an OS bowler who was averaging 30 per wicket at youth level.
He shows more promise than that in our eyes and he will be our number one spin bowler ahead of the experienced Dean Cosker.

Dean Cosker (29)
Dean is a SLA bowler whose FC average is 39 and OD average 33.
A steady rather than spectacular bowler who could well get a lot of games depending on how young Richard Knowles performs.

Kyle Tudge (20)
Kyle is a completely unknown quantity as a SLA bowler. He will likely get the opportunity reasonably early on to show whether he has the goods!

Challenge Trophy - South (Somerset v Glamorgan)

On a pitch expected to favour the seamers rather than spinners, we put out the following team, taking the gamble on using Nicky Peng's offspin as the fith bowling option.

Glamorgan

J.Maher
M.Powell (capt)
B.Wright
W.Eyre
S.Fowler
N.Peng
W.Bragg (wk)
S.Clark
D.Harrison
S.Jones
H.Waters

Somerset - 147

M.Trescothick - 50
N.Peng - 5/13
S.Clark - 3/31

Glamorgan - 142

A.Caddick - 3/34
A.Laraman - 3/36
C.Willoughby - 3/41

Marcus Trescothick proved to be the difference between the two sides as no other batsman in either side could get past 30! :-O

The big bonus to come out of the match for us was the superb bowling debut of Nicky Peng who finished with an amazing 8.2-2-13-5!
Looks like we've found the extra spinning option we were lacking.

Somerset

Cricketer Of The Year
Unlucky to lose there chasing a modest total from Somerset, good luck with the new team. ;)

Essex - 210/4

V.Chopra - 69
R.T'eschate - 69

Win to Essex by 6 wickets

At 100/1 in our first innings, we were going along well. However with Bradley Wright's dismissal, the innings collapsed as the nerves of the new boys got the better of them.

Leg spinner Richard Knowles made an impressive debut with the ball to put us back in the match with superb figures of 22-4-82-6.
The 46 runs added by the last two wickets proved to be very valuable in the long run.

Our second innings saw another collapse from a useful position, as we slumped from 236/4 to 281 all out.
A bonus was Stephen Fowler's half century on debut as he and Nicky Peng added 117 for the fifth wicket.

R.T'eschate proved to be a real nemesis for us in this match with his accomplished batting, and it was a big second wicket partnership with Chopra that took the win out of our reach after Steven Clark had snapped up Pettini early in the piece.

Challenge Trophy South - Middlesex v Glamorgan

Our third match on the road and we retained the same eleven that had lost at Essex.

Glamorgan - 217/8

N.Peng - 77
B.Wright - 49
M.Kartik - 3/45
R.Johnson - 3/58

Middlesex - 218/7

N.Compton - 61
S.Jones - 4/50

Another close one for us following our 5 run loss in the first pool game.

We have real problems with our top order at present, and with a long tail, recovering from 79/4 was always going to be a tough ask.
Bradley Wright initially, and then Nicky Peng ensured that we would at least be competitive as they helped get us through to 217/8.

Simon Jones did his best to snatch victory for us with a stunning spell that saw Middlesex fall from 155/4 to 188/7.
Unfortunately, Richard Johnson stood firm amongst the carnage, and it was he who guided to home side through to victory in the 48th over.

County Championship D2 - Glamorgan v Nottinghamshire

Our first home match with the new squad, and we were looking to prove to the home fans that we're a force to be reckoned with.

Again, no changes to the playing eleven as we keep the faith with what we consider our best side.

Nottinghamshire - 229

C.Read - 65
B.Shafayat - 56
S.Clark - 3/38

Glamorgan - 609

J.Maher - 167
M.Powell - 93
B.Wright - 90
W.Eyre - 76
S.Fowler - 44
W.Bragg - 42no
C.Shreck 3/138
R.Sidebottom - 3/142

Nottinghamshire - 481

W.Jefferson - 112
M.Ealham - 96
M.Wagh - 81
S.Patel - 55
S.Jones - 3/116

Glamorgan - 4/0

Match drawn

A century partnership between Read and Shafayat saw the visitors recover from 84/5, but a
further late order collapse had us happy with their low total of 229.
All of our bowlers impressed.

Our top order batting came right with a vengeance as we then posted a massive 609 in reply.
Aussie, Jimmy Maher, got able support from Powell, Wright, Eyre and Fowler as we romped to 499/3.
Another slump from the middle to late order was arrested somewhat by keeper William Bragg's fine knock of 42no.

A stubborn century from Notts opener Wayne Jefferson plus a stylish half century from Patel held their second innings together, but when we had them at 282/6, we were in with a chance of a win.
But veteran Mark Ealham rallied the tail behind him as he scored a dominating 96 to take the game out of our reach.
We were hoping for more from our spinners, Richard Knowles and Nicky Peng, on a turning pitch, but they could only finish with 53-7-138-1 and 34-11-67-2 respectively. :whistling

A nice break from our three losses to date however, with a dominating performance at home. :)

3rd Umpire
Challenge Trophy South - Sussex v Glamorgan

With two losses from two to date in this competition, we were out for blood today! 8-)

Our England contracted fast bowler, Simon Jones, is unavailable for today's game as he recovers from a niggle, so David Harrison gets another run. Otherwise our team remains unchanged apart from changes to the batting order:

J.Maher
M.Powell (capt)
W.Bragg (wk)
B.Wright
N.Peng
S.Fowler
W.Eyre
R.Knowles
S.Clark
D.Harrison
H.Waters

Glamorgan - 257/6

M.Powell - 81
J.Maher - 46

Middlesex - 216

M.Yardy - 54
C.Adams - 45
R.Montgomerie - 43
H.Waters - 6/60
R.Knowles - 3/51

Victory at last!

A decisive batting display saw us gather a very competitive 257/6, with our openers leading by example.

In reply, the ageing Sussex lineup couldn't cope with the enthusiasm and ability of our young bowlers.
Richard Knowles bowled well to capture 3/51 while speedster Huw Waters ripped through the middle order and tail to take an astonishing 6/60.
