I tend to think of Bedser more as being at the low end of the first tier so it's definitely him for me on this list.

Yeah by tier I was more thinking the guys who aren’t really in the running for the ATG England team

Nah, Broaderson are hugely responsible for any success that England have the last 2 decades. Willis doesn't have the breadth, girth, or tonnage to compare to either.

Willis has big performances in overseas victories such as 5/27 in Kolkata, 5/44 in Perth, and 4/14 in Christchurch. England won two of those series (drew the other) and he inflicted massively destructive displays on the Ashes at home when England won in 1977&1981. Frequently took out a significant percentage of the top 6 on those occasions. Admittedly some help from packer in Perth (1978), but Willis got rid of Kim Hughes and Graeme Yallop for cheap scores and they were both good Test batsmen.

West Indies (probably the most consistently strong batting lineup of his time) had frequent success against Willis and there is the no balls caveat (think he averages 28 when you include those), but Bob was a match winner, ATVG in my eyes and had a very long career for someone with his bowling style that was plagued by injuries. I would rank him above Broad and not far behind Anderson.

I voted Snow here because he's a personal favourite and I don't have a strong opinion on who's no1.

Do you have Anderson as an ATG or ATVG?
