State Shield Final/S.O.O

Well, im really pleased the final will be in Christchurch. Since im going to be down there next week I now get to see both the final & the State of Origin match at Jade Stadium!.

I think Canterbury will win the Shield Final, they have an awesome team at the moment.

The SOO squads wil be named tomorow.

Someone out of Papps, Fulton, Cumming is going to miss out.

If one of them is going to be the 12th man, they should just give one of them to the North because they are lacking openers.

I don't know how the hell they could leave out the 2 highest run-scorers in the State Shield, so surely that means Craig Cumming misses out.

Although that too isn't that justifiable if they're going to pick Hamish Marshall despite the fact that he's scored about 15 runs in about 5 innings for N.D.

Well the South bowling is going to be really weak. Especially as the pace bowling department.

They could still play all the batsman I mentioned, but they would have to play McMillan as the 5th bowler.

Ok well im going to try & pick the teams the selectors will pick, not who I want in there: (there might be a few question marks over a couple of players too)

South Island:

Michael Papps
Stephen Fleming
Nathan Astle
Peter Fulton
Craig McMillan
Chris Harris
Brendon McCullum
Jeff Wilson
Paul Wiseman
Bradley Scott
Chris Martin

I can't actually pick North Island...um..maybe I'll think of their team later.

OK the North Island team...

like Tim said, in the selectors mind

NI Team
M Sinclair/L Vincent (if not injured)
J Ryder
H Marshall
R Taylor
S Styris
C Cairns
J Oram
D Vettori
R Young +
D Tuffey
I Butler

Hard on Aaron Barnes because he has been so consistentthis season.

I agree with that team, except I doubt they'll go with Reece Young. It'll either be Vincent or Nevin behind the stumps im afraid.

Reece Young has been highly impressive this year,

Easily the most tidy keeper in NZ except Hart and McCullum.

And his batting has matured greatly as well.

Could be an option.

And this is where the S.O.O idea is faulty if the selectors want to use it as a trial match because where do players like Michael Mason, Kyle Mills, Andre Adams, Bruce Martin, Craig Cumming etc go?

They were far better off making 2 Possible/Probable teams.

Because he should be treated like everyone else and he should earn his place like everyone else. :!(

I agree with Ryder opening....C.D are wasting him at 5.
Ryder is most likely going to open for NZ in ODI's so C.D should shift him up to opener. How has struggled since he got that 94 so maybe he should be the one to drop down the order.

I can't see Sinclair opening...it'll be James Marshall or Chris Nevin most likely.

I just don't see the point in a trial match where possibly Chris Cairns & Jacob Oram are on the same team and likewise with Craig Cumming & Michael Papps. Probably the 2 positions where the players in contention need to be on opposite teams.

Unless Chris Cairns pulls finger with the bat, I can't see NZ playing both Cairns & Oram in England...i personally think NZ should go for the bowling all-rounder if Oram is starting to gain confidence with the bat.
Not Adams...maybe someone like Paul Hitchcock or Matthew Walker who are capable of scoring a few runs, but their main priority will be to bowl well.

I really don't know where Astle will be batting...the selectors seem to think opening is now out of the question, but Marshall is established at #3.

Does anyone agree with:

Michael Papps
Stephen Fleming
Hamish Marshall
Nathan Astle
Scott Styris
Craig McMillan
Jacob Oram
Brendon McCullum
Daniel Vettori
Kyle Mills
Daryl Tuffey

Now..I think we need the extra bowling option in there...so who do you take out? It's either got to be Papps or someone in the middle order.

Nathan Astle
Stephen Fleming
Hamish Marshall
Scott Styris
Craig McMillan
Jacob Oram
Brendon McCullum
Daniel Vettori
Kyle Mills
Paul Hitchcock
Daryl Tuffey

That side would be my choice providing that Oram & McCullum are scoring more runs...Vettori is probably good enough to bat #8 & Mills & Hitchcock are more than capable of scoring some runs too.

I can see Sinclair getting selected. WHy Not? He has performed thus year. Avreaginghigher than Nevin.

Yeah but think about it mate, is Sinclair really in contention to open for NZ?

If this had just been Nth v Sth then yeah maybe..but this is a trial match so therefore I can't see NZ picking Sinclair to open unless they're really stranded for options.

cumming will definitly play in the S.O.O, i doubt ryder will cos he hasnt even been playing for central. the game last year was playe dwithout black caps if i remeber rightly, so there wernt the same worries of players missing out. personally im more likley to watch the SOO rather than a trail match.

The question will be whether the selectors are prepared to allow Ryder back into the frame after his mis-conduct late last month.

He was apparently meant to be picked ahead of Cumming for that 5 match series in Pakistan but lost his place.
I'd say he's now fallen past Michael Papps too but I think the selectors will still pick Ryder in the hope that he'll play his natural game as an opener.

This would be a brave side for NZ, but I like it. Hiding capable batsmen down the order is just a waste, so it's time we yanked the "Vettori at 10" security blanket away from guys like McMillan and Styris and asked them to pony up.

Styris said in a column that he'd rather win one game for his side in each series than score 40 in each innings. That's all very courageous, but 40 from each man would mean plenty of healthy partnerships, which is usually the key to either a run chase or giving your bowlers enough to defend. If our #4 and #5 keep trying to be heroes, I'm not sure about Oram at #6.
