Round 5 One Day Reports

Guyana Get First Win At Home

Guyana once again were punished for not using all of there overs by setting Karachi a competitive, but not challenging total. Guyana were dismissed for 224 from 14.1 overs. Guyana were in deep trouble at 3-31 after 6.1 overs after Chopra (1), Perren (5) and Sarwan (7) all fell quickly. A middle order recovery by captain McKenazie (47) and wicket keeper and top-scorer Baugh (52) saved Guyana from humiliation, the pair added 72 for the fifth wicket and built on the early work done by Hills (32). Another partnership of 33 between Baugh and Cole (36*) helped Guyana to 6-169 after 30.1 overs. Cole combined well with the tail to move Guyana to 224 and Guyana captain McKenzie was left wondering what could have been if his top order had fired. Karachi’s opening bowler Elstub (3-30) was the pick of the bowlers.

Guyana opened with vice-captain Sarwan (5-29) who struck early in the first over to remove Baig for naught. Sarwan then combined with Giles (2-43) to have Karachi trembling at 5-49 after 12 overs. Top-scorer Afzaal (73) then combined with McMillan (58) for a 114 run partnership, before Mackenzie removed Afzaal, however it was not enough as Sarwan and Lawson (2-39) combined to finish of the Karachi innings 16 runs short in the 49th over. Positive signs for the rest of the season for Guyana with promising batting from Baugh and Cole and economical bowling from Lawson and Sarwan’s first five wicket haul.

Guyana 224 (41.1)

Baugh 52 (46)
McKenzie 47 (60)

Elstub 3-30 (8.1)
McMillan 2-43 (7)

Karachi 208 (48.3)

Afzaal 78 (133)
McMillan 58 (84)

Sarwan 5-29 (8.3)
Lawson 2-39 (10)

Warwickshire make it 5 from 5.

Warwickshire kept their 100% record intact beating Leicester by 5 wickets.

Batting first Leicester were never in the game, as they were rolled for 183. Hitchcock was the pick of the bowlers taking 3/45, while Kaneria (2/41), Gregson (1/32) and Astle (1/29) all chipped in with wickets as well. Piggott and Anderton both made 64 in what was otherwise a poor batting display.

In Warwickshires reply most batsmen made starts but only keeper Zac McDonald was able to go on scoring an unbeaten 49 off 53 balls. Hemp (22) Astle (29) Howarth (24) and Rowell (20) all made worthy contributions helping Warwickshire get home with nearly 10 overs to spare.

This win sees Warwickshire reach the half way mark with 5 wins in 5 games. Tamil Nadu is close behind and their round 6 clash could potentially decide the outcome of the division 3 one day league. A win for Warwickshire and they'll open up a 20 point lead (thats if wins are worth 10 as they are in the record viewer), meaning they'll need only a couple of wins in their remaining fixtures to gain automatic promotion. If Tamil Nadu win the title race will be wide open.

NB: My WCC hopes and dreams still lie in the four day version of the game..
