Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
it's captain
Oh then it's hard to say.

Waugh is overrated. With the team he had he still ended up losing in SL and India and couldn't stop the dead rubber test phenomenon. On the field could be clueless which is why you had huge matchchanging partnerships in his time. How on Earth with his attack can he regularly have teams chase over 300 to win, or Laxman and Dravid bat an entire day with no wicket? He simply waited for wickets to fall you felt.

Ponting was tactically a bit better on the field yet has some outright howlers like the Edgbaston toss decision and the 2008 last test against India when he decided to bowl part timers because of OR.

In the end I am going slightly with Waugh because the Pontings losses were just worse, he lost the Ashes three times including at home with three innings defeats, and took Australia from No.1 ATG ranking to a mid tier side. Even with a weakened team that's inexcusable.
