Officially to focus on his studies, but I think he may have been a bit frustrated by playing as a specialist #8 batsman so often as a young promising player.

Wellington's balance was weird with Franklin, Elliott and Woodcock occupying upper middle order spots and bowling lots.

Jamie Siddons and that run of Australian coaches was so dire. Siddons couldn't balance a side to save his life, couldn't he work with players who were different to his ideal in any capacity and told blatant lies like "Mark Gillespie is booming through the crease" when he was half fit and bowling cute medium outswingers.

Wellington were also greatly affected by Siddons, Stuart etc bringing over random Australian club players to get eaten alive. Stewart Rhodes' 62 ball duck the highlight.

I think the best game of that era though was Central chasing 400 for the loss of 1 wicket against Welly. God they were ****.

Of recent Australian players, Michael Hussey the clear standout. Had been generally excellent with the bat in the two years leading up to his retirement and wasn't someone for whom fitness would be an issue. Probably could've gone on 2-3 years longer; Australia badly missed him on their 2013 India & England tours.
