Players who did well as understudy but never stepped up?

Paranoid Kendroid

School Boy/Girl Captain
Like after the retirements of Misbah and Younis, Asad Shafiq and to some extent, Azhar Ali, could not really step up as the next senior batters.

Ali TT

International Captain
Stuart MacGill the no-brainer answer.

In tests with Warne playing, he averaged 12 with the bat, compared to just 8 in tests without him.

A similar trend with his bowling (33v22).

I reckon Anderson actually would have been ok this series. Wouldn't have taken bags of wicket but at his best would have held up an end. Like 20 overs 1-40
