Not looking back after you nick one

pardus

U19 12th Man
I always thought it is rather instinctive for batsmen to look back at the keeper/slips after they nick one off a fast/seam bowler.
I have seen most batsmen doing it, especially back in the day.
It's possible, today with growing awareness, batsmen have conditioned themselves not to do it.

I was watching below video of WI-Aus Test match in 2003.
At five minute mark (5:00) in the video, Lara clearly appears to have nicked one off Gillespie (at least there's a clear sound).
Umpire doesn't give Lara out and the Aussie players are understandably very upset.
However in repeated replays, especially the replay at 6:27 of the video, complete nonchalance in Lara's demeanor after he
played the shot is very apparent. He doesn't look back at all.

Did Lara genuinely not know he nicked it, or did he put up an act (there was extreme bad blood between the sides at this point)?
