2005 is the most important victory, it's the end of 16 years of endless, brutal suffering and a rebirth for English Cricket.

I reckon Aus vs WI 1995 is pretty overrated in terms of importance. WI were badly on the decline already. WI would've lost to SA during that time too, they just happened to play Australia before them. In terms of actual cricketing importance rather than the storyline/narrative, I'd say Australia going to SA and beating them in 1997 was a more impressive and more significant result in history which actually cemented the team as the best of the generation beyond doubt.

Australia weren't expected to win in WI though.

Hmm not sure. England were wasted in 2007 that would have ruined any confidence they had from 2005.
it didn't because if I remember correctly, with a similar level of team we won 2009 and had a good attitude to it, the retirements of McWarne and decline of Ponting was very rejuvenating.

It's debatable if they would have lost in 2009 if they had lost in 2005. Aus played pretty bad in 2009.

Nice try but South Africa weren't beating WI in the Caribbean. Had they played in South Africa thats a different story. The WI lost exactly ONE series at home in the 90s so what Australia did was amazing. Not only did they end WIs 15 year unbeaten streak, they beat the WI in fortress Barbados and became the first team to win in the WI in 22 years.

I feel like we would.
Regardless even though Ashes 2005 is more celebrated, we may get a situation where Ashes 2010 is the only victory in Australia in half a century. I think there are many England teams in the future who will look at it wondering how Strauss cracked the formula.
