Cricketer Of The Year
In case the batsmen were getting lonely.
May always does very well in adjusted average-type exercises because the Tests he played in were uniquely low-scoring for a post-WW1 player.I tend to think all three are underrated a little on CW but I've gone with Kalls > Miandad > May which I suspect will probably win the poll.
May benefited enormously when I standardised his average (46.77 --> 54.23) and the only reason he didn't end up in the top 20 of that list was his relatively short career. One day I'd like to go through his career match by match and figure out why my system loved it so much.
Yeah that makes sense. When I look at his overall record he played a disproportionate amount of games at home and did a lot better at home than he did away, and usually any player like that gets beaten up a bit by my system, but the opposite happened which always surprised me a bit.May always does very well in adjusted average-type exercises because the Tests he played in were uniquely low-scoring for a post-WW1 player.
Yeah he even had brutish conditions away from home according to RPW so that doesn't surprise me but I noticed your system does punish overseas underperformance. Yeah I've got his career only half as long as Miandad's, and Miandad's last four years were pretty awful. If we found Miandad's best consecutive seven years I suspect they'd have a better standardised average than May, and I don't like punishing players for being good enough to be picked when very young or committed enough to keep making themselves available until the selectors tapped them on the shoulder. More complicated with May though I suppose because I believe he had some health issues in his prime - his actual career spans 10 years but I've only got him down for 7.Yeah he even had brutish conditions away from home according to RPW so that doesn't surprise me but I noticed your system does punish overseas underperformance. In low-scoring tests away from home, Peter actually averages more than Javed and Kallis under the same filters. Not sure I would place him off the bottom here due to longevity issues and no matter how tough the conditions were he still has iffy credentials outside England. Nevertheless, he was clearly a very good tough wickets bat. There's some NZ bullying in there but he has some classics against Australia and South Africa too.
May had health issues and I think as an amateur felt inclined to prioritise the job he was paid for. Sods law in a way as I suspect he could quite easily have scored heavily in the early 60s after playing in almost exclusive bowler-friendly conditions.Yeah I've got his career only half as long as Miandad's, and Miandad's last four years were pretty awful.
