International Captain
Era. It was a high scoring era where 70% of matches were drawn. Almost no great bowlers. Barrington was never seen as a great in his time
Yea people think Barrington and Boycott played in hard eras when the opposite is likely true

I still think Barrington is a great though

average in the matches Barrington played – 31.85

averages in the matches say Kane Williamson played – 31.91

it's not that bad

He may have played in a relatively high scoring era. (still with a lower overall average than anything post 2000’s, but whatever)

He was by far the best bat during his career, excluding Sobers, who nobody is comparing him to.

Looked at that list, and while I do consider Barrington ATG, the quality of batting in that era really seems quite down. Sobers, Barrington, Kanhai and Boycott; only 4 makes my Top 50...... Can count Simpson in the group at most.

I wouldnt say he didn’t face quality bowlers either. Just some names off the top of my head.

Davidson, Benaud, Gibbs, Hall, Tayfield, Pollock, Adcock, Bedi, Chandra, Prasanna.

23.65 + 26.74 = 50.39

58.67 > 50.39

Simple maths
Neh

Ashwin's batting average is 26.74 and bowling average is 23.65. And in the matches involving ravi Ashwin, the average batting (or bowling) average is 30.82.
So applying the formula (batting average/overall average)+(overall average/bowling average) we get,
26.74/30.82+30.82/23.65= 2.1707.

Barrington's batting average was 58.67 and bowling average was 44.8. And the overall average in the matches he played in was 33.2. So applying the same formula we get,
58.67/33.2+33.2/44.8= 2.5082.

Ok I'm sorry.

people get excited about him today because of his average but he just wasn’t seen as top tier in his era. Partly because he was a particularly dour batsmen in a time when test cricket was excruciatingly boring

bow many of these names would you consider ATGs. Davidson maybe,

all very good but there’s no Akram, Ambrose, Marshall, McGrath, Steyn, Murali, Warne in there list. Not even a Cummins or Bumrah other than Davidson.
