Barry Richards has been named by multiple test players and pundits as the best batsman they've ever seen, he's obviously made quite a few AT XI's and cricinfo's and Martin Crowe's second teams.

Best batsman in the world for more than a half decade and Bradman rates him on the same plane as Hobbs and Hutton.

He could and have consistently done things no other opener can, and was a first rate slip fielder.

Not many players are beating that quality or resume, certainly not Kapil.

If one wants to say he had a better test career, then sure, better cricketer? Not a chance.

You aren't comparing an illustrious career with a good career here. You are comparing an illustrious career with a nothing career. Kapil took almost as many wickets as the runs Barry scored.

It's not impossible. Gavaskar got 12 votes in the Wisden's five cricketers of the century, all of them were wrong.

You know I never said that, but not re litigating that either.

So there's peer rating, then there's actual performances against the very best. He had both.

You don't have to think he's the best, but arguing that he's not in that class doesn't make sense.

@kyear2 Why do you like him so much?
He's one of one with regards to his skill set. He had an excellent technique, and could consistently take apart the very best pacers on helpful tracks. There's isn't another opener that we've seen who can do that.

And why do you like Hadlee, AT bowler and an above average no. 8. Barry was an AT opener and elite slip.

If I could build an opener in a lab the only difference I would make is that he would be left handed.

Oh, and have you ever watched him bat????
