@MexicanRiver Thoughts on this comparison?
Younis was very average against all types of fast bowling. Outside of CT 2013, he doesn't have any quality knocks outside Asia. His record in sena is more inflated than Venezuela's economy; he failed when the ball moved or bounced and cashed in when flat pitches were on offer. That was the pattern throughout his career: failing in all innings and a big knock in the last test of the series in the oval or Sydney Road against a tired attack at the end of the season. Failing in all inning and 1 big hundred with a notout on 500 vs. 500 games to improve the overall series average. Blood-boiling stuff. Gooch is much better. Younis wouldn't have had a career outside of Asia in any other era outside of his own. Even in Asia, when the ball actually turned he failed, people go wet around his 4th inning record, which came mostly on the featherbed

I mean, I don't disagree that most of his big innings outside Asia came on flat decks but it still takes some serious mental discipline to capitalise on those.

Also, even though it was a flat deck, do you seriously think his 218 at the Oval doesn't qualify as a quality knock? It was an absolute classic imo.

Yeah I voted for Gooch because I think he's the better tough conditions bat but agree Younis deserves a lot of credit for being so clinical on flat tracks. It's why I think Younis is better than Inzi in tests. Better at going big.

It was a decent knock, but that knock doesn't prove that he was a good player of movement, so his record in England flatters him in that sense. Yes, he deserves credit for capitalizing on those pitches, but my point is that he would have gotten so few of those in Gooch's era, especially if he had to play on tough home pitches and a brutal schedule like England. So eventually it comes down to his ability to play quality pace, bounce, etc., which he never proved himself against.

Gooch was great at going big on flatties too. Unfortunately unlike Younis, he never really got chances like that.

Do you rate Gooch higher than Miandad too?
