Gooch. as an opener, he has the higher RPI of 42.45 vs Greenidge's 41.14. Greenidge played 108 tests and aceraged 44.72, Gooch after 108 tests averaged 44.75. And that is all without factoring in the fact that Gooch had to play 1/4 of his innings against ATG pace lineups from West Indies, Greenidge didn't have to play even a single inning against them

Almost opposite careers.

Greenidge was ATG level for much of his career and comparable to Sunny before a disastrous fall off.

Gooch was mediocre for most of his career and then had one of the greatest purple patches in cricket history at the end

That said, raw averages don’t tell the whole story. Greenidge was great for much longer and stylistically it’s not close.

who is sunhad.

anyway, Gooch was always very good bar Ashes tests, 1981 West Indies and him dominating Le Roux and Van Der Bijl should show that. Just that his struggles with that godforsaken Terry Alderman.

c'mon brother he was not comparable to Sunny
he was a 50 averaging opener long into his career

I also rate sunny lower than most on this forum

And being a huge David Gower fan, it’s hard for me to like Gooch

Why?

Oh, and you can rate both lol, but Yeah I'd rather watch an hour of Gower batting.

I tend to favor the cricketer who was more highly rated the majority of his career.

Gooch's rating comes from his last 5 or so years when he finally solved his Ashes problems, by the end of 1995-2000, I don't think there was a huge difference in how they were rated, Greenidge obviously infinitely more memorable as he was from the most memorable era of Windies cricket and Gooch from a rather forgettable one for english Cricket.

Goochs WI record is seriously impressive but is dampened by his rather poor Ashes record.

Don't think that is true. Gooch is more celebrated by English cricket (and Warne to his credit) whereas Greenidge simply had a higher peer rating.

You underrate Gooch if you think Greenidge being compared to him is Greenidge being underrated.
No they are definitely close. I favor Greenidge based on better peer rating and credit for being generally a bit more aggressive in a tough era.

Windies bowlers rated him, and he used to be rated on par with Gower even before his peak, Who the Australians in mid 80s saw as the best in the world, I think his peer rep was pretty high

More of the cricketers I saw from the era selected Greenidge in their ATG XIs and not Gooch. I think Gooch had a good rep but definitely not Greenidge level.
