Do recall SA didnt have a great bat in the 90s.
Yeah. I agree it's close between them. But I'm going with Shaun here because he was exceptional in the 1990s. He averaged 20 with the ball, and his WPM was 4.23 in the 1990s (with a good to great record everywhere he toured). Batting-wise, the South African team wasn't that bad 1990s. They were the 3rd-best batting team in the 1990s. I'm going with Shaun here, but if someone chose Graeme ahead of him, I'm also ok with that. (Maybe I'm biased towards an ATG bowler rather than an ATG batsman.) And also, Shaun was decent with the bat.

South Africa relied a lot on their batting depth for much of the 90s. Taking Shaun out means they'd lose some of that depth as well as obviously one of their key bowlers, and I'm not sure that Graeme would be be enough to offset that.

Saying South Africa was a strong batting side is an interesting take. C’mon their best batsmen were Kirsten and Cullinan. The reason the overall average is so high is because of their lower order

They were probably the second best batting side of the 90s.

I've never said they had a strong batting line-up like Aussies 1990s. But also their batting wasn't that bad, like Kiwis in the 1990s. Statistically, they were the 3rd best batting team in the 1990s. Wessels in the early 90s and Kallis in the late 90s were also good with the bat. If your top-order batters mostly had to bat in South Africa in the 1990s, they aren't going to average much anyway. Add to that, most of the South African batters(top order batters) averaged more away from home in the 1990s.

SA late 9ps had Kirsten, Gibbs, Cullinan, Kallis, Cronje, Rhodes. A good lineup.

I think people are forgetting how weak the Pakistani pace bowler ranks were in the 2000s

Umar Gul and Mohammed Sami were 2 of the mainstays during that time, and Abdul Razzaq was even opening the bowling at times!

Kapils bowling would have hugely improved that team in that decade, and his lower order batting would have meant Kamran Akmal could be dropped for a specialist keeper

Yeah Asif and Akthar lacked the fitness that Kapil had. They could have used a steady pacer.
