Ewen Chatfield

CricAddict

International Coach
Ewen Chatfield is rated as one of the top ODI bowlers of all time in so many ratings while he is never spoken about in CW in any discussion. Any reason why? Is he under-rated due to Hadlee taking all the mindshare?

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Probably CW's bias towards test matches. He was undeniably an incredibly effective ODI bowler, one of NZ's top 5 of all time (alongside Hadlee, Bond, Boult and Vettori). In tests he just didn't have the pace to force that many mistakes from batsmen, so he was really just a support act to Hadlee, trying to prevent the release of pressure. But still a legend of NZ cricket either way.

International Vice-Captain
As opposed to say Garner, who is.

I'd say that Garner as a master of the yorker is seen as likely to be successful whatever the era. I assume Garner also bowled death.

Chatfield was bowled less at the death, although he did do it (unlike say Larsen a decade later). But my memory and my youth at the time means I can't remember how regularly.

I mean he has a higher ER than his team mate Hadlee, and Hadlee definitely did bowl at the death, every match, even as much as 5 of his overs in the last 10 was a standard tactic.

Chatfield was an absolute legend of NZ cricket culture at the time, but ... it was of that time, that place (pitches), of an amateur / semi-pro mastering a single skill (a meteronome) to such a high degree that he could be up their with the best of that time. Plus his comical batting made him a cult hero.
