It has to be at worst closer than it seems. Was Greenidge really such a better bat to overcome Simpson's leg breaks and ATG slip fielding? Also had a significantly long test career in terms of years. Not to mention his reputation as a captain.

Not sure how one can vote Greenidge under the banner “cricketer”. Sure I can see him being rated a better bat (tbf Simpson has a more well rounded record) but with Simpson’s part time spin and being probably the greatest slip ever I can’t justify having Greenidge above him.

Greenidge.

Conveying the value of bowlers like Simpson, Barlow and Dexter is a bit tricky though.

Barlow is a much superior bowler than those two though, he was a proper all-rounder.
I couldn't think of anyone else with just over 1 wicket per match and wanted 3 examples. I should have said McCabe or Hammond although Walter had slightly less than 1 and was more reluctant than Dexter.

Yeah, agree.

Greenidge was good in the slips, Simpson was special. That plus the bowling and I can't vote Greenidge ahead.
