I feel that the 2005 attack was greater than the sum of its parts. You could easily criticise Harmison and Giles and argue that Hoggard was too dependant on conditions. And yet one of the all time great sides hardly ever dominated with the bat in that series, and were usually dismantled reasonably comprehensively. It's hard to evaluate the late 1970s attack based on the 1978-79 Ashes given how depleted the Australians were. But most of those guys provided some serious evidence in other series to suggest that they belong in the higher echelons of English attacks.
