New Zealand odi team of the 90s, should've been world beators?

NZ were a decent team in the late 90's, but I feel their performance in the 99 World Cup reflected their ceiling - a distant fourth behind Aus, SA and Pakistan.

Nathan Smith having a good game with the bat this time (33* and 57) though a more modest 107/3 with the ball.

Kinda funny that he's bowled way faster in tests (close to 146 at the Basin) than we've seen him bowl in t20's and ODI's. Seems like the kinda guy who needs time at the crease to find his rhythm.

Was Dan Vettori better than the stats suggest

One of my favourite "Andrew Miller is a cartoon of an English cricket" writer moments was the time he insisted that Graeme Swann was the best test match #8 bat in the world because Vettori was SO good that he shouldn't be batting at 8.

Was Dan Vettori better than the stats suggest

I'm glad we have the DRS but I feel like the game's really lost something by no longer giving us the chance to experience little moments of comedy like this.

Was Dan Vettori better than the stats suggest

Vettori as a bowler was at his best from 97-00 (when he took 105 at 32). Not a massive difference from his overall career average you might say, but it's worth remembering that there was no Bangladesh to bully and Zimbabwe actually had a pretty solid looking batting lineup in the 90's. If you...

Who is the 2nd greatest Kiwi Bowler?

I've often thought it was a shame Bond had to play in such a weak era for NZ seam bowling. Feel like his body would've held up much better as a first or 2nd change bowling three-ish 5 over spells a day. Would've slotted in perfectly behind Cairns/Nash/Doull or Soultner.

He's gunning for Southee's spot. They don't want to risk the potential of Smith gunning it and having to answer questions about why Southee is still playing tests ahead of him. Incidentally, I saw Smith had a quiet but profitable start to his CC campaign, picking up 3/49 in a relatively...

Ten players you are glad you saw in their prime

One player that I'm very glad I saw in their prime was Mitch Johnson. Anybody who never saw him during the 2013/14 summer will take one look at his career stats and say "so what?" Really wish I'd had the chance to see Jeff Thomson for the same reason.

Who is the 2nd greatest Kiwi Bowler?

I think Boult is overall a slightly better bowler than Southee in tests, even factoring in that Boult wasn't debuted too young and retired while still close to his peak. Having said that, if you look at Southee's numbers during the same age-range that Boult was while he was playing tests...

    Boxing thread

Yeah, if he can beat Parker then he'll probably have a good shot at one last big money payday with AJ before the latter goes off to fight the winner of the Fury-Usyk fights. Though given how effective Parker has been with his uppercut in recent fights, I tend to think Whyte probably gets knocked...

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Winners, losers 23/24 Winners Dale Phillips - his first real big season with the bat afaia Nathan Smith - top wicket taker and a couple of 50's to boot, and seemed to fairly clearly out bowl Southee in his last game of the season. Zak Foulkes - outstanding numbers for such a young player...

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Looks like a cracking final day ahead in the de facto plunket shield final. Wellington 4 down and only 90 ahead, but with Logan van Beek batting at number 11 there's still plenty of batting there to set up a competitive target.

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Lol, at that Seifert dismissal. Pre-empted the switch hit, got in a muddle, decided to try an orthodox left handed push into the covers, somehow managed to chop it back onto his stumps from about a meter outside off.

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Would have to be up there with the best domestic openers to never play for NZ. Wish him all the best.
