    Best After The Don

From all accounts, Bradman seemed to be a very highly-driven individual whose only motive in life was --- to score more runs :-) That quality, IMO, would have helped him a lot in conquering any other obstacle that may have come against him in the modern era. If anything, the extra money and...

    Best After The Don

I'm no expert on the history of Bodyline. But I thought the main purpose was to psychologically scare Bradman, because Jardine thought he was "yellow". That's why they bowled Bodyline even against the other Australians, and even before the Test Series started. I remember reading somewhere that...

    Greatest Bowler

Very good analysis. Though I wouldn't consider verbal intimidation aka sledging aka trash talking to be better than physical intimidation. I consider VI to be cowardly and passive-aggressive ... but that's just me. Most of us know this, but it's worth mentioning again that the WI "terrorizers"...

    Greatest Bowler

The great thing about Murali and Warne is that they are spinners who have strike-rates that are almost on par with the great fast bowlers. This is unprecedented for spinners, unless you bring in bowlers from the George Lohmann days. What fascinates me about this is that they were so successful...

    Greatest Bowler

Warne was a great bowler, my only issue with him was that he had a very good supporting cast (both bowlers and batsman). This IMO makes his job easier since the burden on his shoulders is less. My vote goes to Murali. My No. 2 would be Hadlee for the same reasons. He carried his team's bowling...

Match Winning Batsmen in Test Cricket

We may unearth some surprises if we go through the scorecards. Here is my pick : Lara Botham Sobers One of the 3 Ws Dravid S Waugh Martin Crowe (?) Andy Flower (?) Special mention: Bradman (as if he wasn't enough, they had Grimment-oReilly, then Lindwall-Miller-Johnston) Viv Richards (if...

Gavin Larsen - Quality, Average or Period Player?

Yeah I remember Gavin Larsen. Always wondered what happened to him. But yes, he was superbly accurate and would frustrate batsmen to no end, but they sorted him out in the end, huh? Another very accurate bowler was John Traicos, the off spinner who played for Zimbabwe in the 80s when he was...

Is test cricket at its lowest ebb?

He may be referring to my earlier comment (not sure). But yeah, Trumper's example is exactly what I meant. Maybe spillover effect of ODIs and T20s.

Is test cricket at its lowest ebb?

I agree with that. There are fewer draws, runs being scored faster, wickets falling faster. Test Cricket has generally become more fast-paced than say the late 80s, early 90s when it was (IMO) at its most boring.

Match Winning Batsmen in Test Cricket

Who is your top 5 for the highest rate of match winning performances? This is where the batsman's performance was the No. 1 reason for the victory. So batsmen belonging to teams with strong bowling attacks are kind of at a disadvantage here. (I'm thinking specifically of the West Indies 70s-80s...

    Best After The Don

Wouldn't say racist .. unless it's selective racism :D But yeah, Thommo is sometimes full of ****. Maybe it's his way of joking. Tendulkar has actually performed as good in AUS as he has in India, and his avg in SouthAf isn't too shabby either. I'm not a big Tendulkar fan myself, but the man has...

    Best After The Don

Viv Richards was a joy to watch, for me personally. He could destroy bowlers and do it consistently. Tendulkar is not the run machine that Don was (or for that matter Lara or even Sehwag - 2 triple centuries). Still, my vote goes to Tendulkar. Simply because the Don himself said once that...

    Batting Average by position

A good point. However, if we start giving weightage to batting position, the slope starts getting slippery, because we then have to factor in the quality of the new-ball bowlers, the weather conditions when the match/day starts etc. Plus fast bowlers can wreak havoc with the old ball too...

    Walter Hammond vs George Headley

Very hard to compare these two giants, due to so many variables discussed by everybody here. My main considerations - Hammond had a much longer Test career (in terms of innings played), and was consistently good during that span. Headley may have played weaker bowling in his home Tests, but then...

    Rapprochement

Yep, a great batsman Sutcliffe. I remember reading somewhere that his batting average never fell below 50 thoughout his Test career. It's a pity he started playing Tests so late (30ish).

    Batting Average by position

Check out this article on batting average by position. Cricket Records, Information and Everything Cricket: Progression of Test Batting Averages of Various Positions No real surprises here! But a few interesting points - 1. Difference between the top and the bottom batting positions seem to...

Obscure non-cricket reasons resulting in players not able to play the match

Sunil Gavaskar deciding to drop himself from any Test Match in Calcutta, because the crowd there booed him and pelted him with fruit.
