The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I vaguely remember reading that Roar article from 2023, so googled to find it. It is an "eras XI" as opposed to an all-time XI. The writer picked 1 player from each of 1877-99, 1900-19, 20-29, 30-49, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s.

Greg Chappell averaged 29 with the ball and had an economy rate of 4.04. He would be the 5th bowler, with Mark Waugh as 6th.

And if all 11 get injured they could also pick this team which is still very good 1) Warner 2) Hayden 3) M. Waugh 4) G. Chappell 5) Clarke/Lehmann 6) M. Hussey 7) Haddin 8) B. Hogg 9) Johnson 10) Lillee 11) Bracken

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Dean Jones was one of the best ODI batters of all time. He was the best in the world from about 1987-1991. It is very close between Jones, Bevan, and Ponting to decide Australia's best ever ODI bat. He was well ahead of Clarke. In my opinion, Hussey and G Chappell were also better than Clarke...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

The top 5 are all righthanders which could be a weakness, so another option might be to open with Saeed Anwar instead of Sehwag or pick Sangakkara at 3 instead of Dravid and pick a specialist keeper.

    De Silva Vs Miandad

Dean Jones started a lot later than Miandad though. Miandad played in the 75 World Cup. Jones was better though. He revolutionised ODI batting and is perhaps Australia's best ever (close with Bevan and Ponting).

Debate thread for 2024 Ranking of batsmen poll

Surely fielding should play no part in ranking batting? It is a shame that Martin Donnelly (incidentally also an attacking leftie and excellent fielder) played so few tests as he would be a worthy vote.

    Steve Waugh vs Younis Khan

Support in favour of Younis is that he batted higher in the order, was great against spin and was a 4th innnings' master, but Waugh was on a higher level. He was better than Tendulkar and Lara for several years and was as important as Warne and McGrath in driving Australia to becoming an ATG...

    Team Battles

My opinion with reasons Mid-70s Aus under Chappell vs Mid-90s Aus under Taylor mid 90s - Warne factor Late 80s WI under Viv vs Early 2010s SA under Smith WI - aura and intimidation Late 80s Pak under Imran vs Late 90s SA under Cronje As long as no "interesting declarations", SA's fielding...

Years or Test - Which is the best way to test longevity?

Everyone assumes that playing lots of tests in disadvantageous, but it is often the reverse. ATGs/ATVGs who play 5 test series have time to salvage their stats even if they struggle for the 1st couple of tests by working out opposition, and really put the foot on the throat against demoralised...

    2024 Ranking of Batsmen Poll

There is no obligation for anyone to vote. Obviously more voters may make rankings seem more valid, but those who wish to stop voting aren't being forced to vote on the 50-75 cohort against their will.
