Passing the paton back to 1877

I think I have found a route back in just seven test matches: In 2003 Jimmy Anderson played with Alec Stewart: scorecard In 1991 Alec Stewart played against Viv Richards: scorecard In 1976 Viv Richards played against Brian Close: scorecard In 1949 Brian Close played with Freddie...

Passing the paton back to 1877

Remarkably, in first class matches you can get from Anderson to WG Grace in 5 matches! See http://www.cricketweb.net/forum/cricket-chat/70844-anderson-1877-10-england-players.html#post3677127

From Anderson to 1877 in 10 England players

Taking first-class matches you can get from Anderson to Grace in just 5: James Anderson played with Alec Stewart in 2003 Alec Stewart played with Ray Illingworth in 1983 Ray Illingworth played with Laurence Fishlock in 1952 Laurence Fishlock played with Jack Hobbs in 1933 Jack Hobbs played...

    SF Barnes

I've just come across this link of SF Barnes in action. Not great footage and he's well past his best but interesting nonetheless. reverse sweeper: S.F. BARNES ON FILM

    Ian Botham vs Keith Miller

Isn't the reason he took so many more wickets than the likes of Imran, Holding, Lillee etc. that they were off playing WSC? There's no doubting that he was a superb bowler in his pomp. Better than Miller? I doubt it.

    New Feature - The Most All-Round All-Rounder

I really enjoyed that article. Thanks. The key thing about a good all-rounder is providing balance to a side. Whether that be as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder depends on the team in which they play. Keith Miller did both which means effectively his team was playing with 12...

*Official* First Test at Swalec Stadium, Cardiff

Entertaining days cricket. Looks to be a fairly even contest thus far. Mistakes were made with regards to dismissals but that's just as much a part of test cricket as bowlers getting batsmen out. Looking forward to tomorrow. I fancy Jimmy to take some wickets if it's swinging.

Which is your preferred limited overs format?

ODIs for me. When the standard is high they are thoroughly enjoyable.

Are Middlesex right in taking on Phil Hughes?

They have every right to employ him. I just hope that England have taken full advantage and had somebody watching him closely to try and spot any weakness. The trouble is from what I've seen so far, his only weakness seems to be his inability to get to 200...

    Graeme Swann

I think that to a large extent, England's fortunes will depend on how well Graeme Swann bowls to the Australian left handers. In his short career so far he has excelled at bowling against left handed batsmen and has bagged a number of high class batsmen. He has the control and variation to cause...

    The Era Chain

It's probably bad form to post three times consecutively in your own thread but did Patsy Hendren ever play WG Grace? If I'm right in thinking Grace finally retired in 1909 then Patsy Hendren started in 1907 as a mere lad of 16. I wonder if their paths crossed? Middlesex and London County maybe?

    The Independent's Dream Australian XI

I'm not knocking them as a team. They are without doubt one of the greatest teams of all time and the individuals you picked are surely worth their spots. What I was trying to say is that none of the English players would get anywhere near a dream XI but still managed to compete against a team...

Oh dear! It's fallen apart! :-O It did seem a bit too good to be true? Any possible other links?

    The Independent's Dream Australian XI

It makes you realise just how good that Australia team that England beat in 2005 was. 5 players from it make your dream XI. Lucky if one player from that England team would get close to a dream England XI. Just goes to show how much of a team game it really is.

    The Independent's Dream Australian XI

Without intruding upon your debate with Bagapath, I think it irrefutable Hayden's calibre as a player. He is one of the all time great openers and his statistics back this up. However, the team The Independent chose was a dream XI and I don't think any dream XI is complete without Victor...

    The Era Chain

It must be impossible for any less than eight players from the very first test onwards. That first class chain that you posted above is remarkable though. 208 years in only 7 matches. Astounding. I've only read very briefly about the origins of first class game (mainly in John Major's book) but...

    The Era Chain

To be fair I did say in my first post "Can anybody come up with a shorter link between players of the early tests and the modern game?". I didn't specify it had to be the first test 8-) Although a very good point!

    The Era Chain

Headley never played with Close in a test match. Close first played the West Indies in 1957. Headley retired in 1954. Nor did Close ever play with Gooch. In that series against the West Indies in 1976 where Close returned, Gooch did not play.

    The Era Chain

Any chance you could post up a test match link with 6 players if you can still remember it. I'd be interested in seeing it. The difficult area when I was trying this was the 2nd World War. When using Headley as a link it's difficult to find anyone who played in his last test match in 1954 who...
