5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

...than the ball did. Why exactly should criticism of a terrible attacking shot be out of bounds even if it came at the end of a great attacking innings? If someone made a great defensive hundred and on the 300th ball he leaves a ball pitching middle hitting middle I'd still call it a terrible...

    All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Not true. The first series he opened in was because Lawry hadn’t debuted yet. McDonald would play his last test less than a year later and Simpson and Lawry became established. Ian Redpath was an opening batsman and when he was brought into the side Simpson stepped down from opening as a trial...

What we learned from the 5th Test

Agree with this. Vaughan mentioned that anyone injured in the first innings should get a second innings sub (but not till then), so that kind of negates the freshness factor. That would work for me. I really wonder what India would've done had they ended up bowling to Woakes yesterday, it's not...

He only opened for 70 innings and dropped down the order frequently during his peak. He does not have the longevity for me to exclude the early no rounder phase. Hanif and Lawry were better for a longer period than the time Simpson spent opening.

What we learned from the 5th Test

See now, 1 and 3 are already covered by existing rules. The rules are there that define what is "external and internal" injuries and which qualifies as what. And the like for likes are named before the game because of concussion and covid sub protocols. The only worry would be 2 and I...

What we learned from the 5th Test

...just doing that to prevent future lawsuits. Part of the challenge of Test cricket is being able to stay fit and firing for five days, and the nature of cricket being turn based with its batting and bowling innings means there is too much risk of a team actually benefiting from its own injury.

What we learned from the 5th Test

...can’t address the issue of getting a new fresh bowler very well, so a compromise would be something like the sub can only bowl in the next innings. No issues with batsmen. 3. Like for like. Name them at the start, subject to match referee concurrence just like concussions. This can get...

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Yeah very fair call on the 2019 v 23 Ashes. The 2019 scoreline was largely dependent on an ATG 4th innings performance from Stokes. Otherwise Australia looked much the better side and were well deserving of something like a 3-1 scoreline. In 23 on the other hand, England generally had the upper...

...series. Think will give him another shot. Pant - 9/10: Superb with the bat and kept decently as well. Jurel - 6.5/10: Kept well and his 2nd innings knock was solid. Reddy - 2.5/10: Very disappointing performance. Needs to increase his pace a solid 10km to have a realistically meaningful Test...

*Official* Road to the 2025-26 Ashes

Personally, given that 3s could face the second ball of the innings, I think it’s a requisite that your 3 should be comfortable opening, whereas 4s you’d expect them to come in a bit later. Wouldn’t be too upset to see any of those names instead of Pope, but the most likely mid to long term m...

Don't forget Akash. Wonder where that ranks among the most crucial innings ever played by a nightwatchman.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Agreed with your general point that Jadeja’s batting has been better, but Sundar’s cameo at the Oval ended up winning the match for India!

“Oh but Crawley will suit the Australian wickets”. He averages 27 in 3 Test matches in Australia with a top score of 77.

What we learned from the 5th Test

He was better in the second innings (on the friendliest wicket of the series), and a bit unlucky with some tough chances dropped off his bowling, but he was still third best, and his first innings was shocking

    Harry brook era

Usually, yes - but this was more about the parallels with Root’s England being crap too. And of course a jibe at the coward who hid 5 and below for 50% of his career, barely scoring any hundreds

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

It did become way harder. There was virtually no swing up until Bethell was ~midway through his innings. You could argue it both ways - bad luck for England that conditions changed, or good fortune that they were easier when their best batsmen were in.

5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

Yeah expect him and Crawley and Brook to make some good runs down there. If England stay pragmatic than arrogant, I actually think they will have a chance. They are assembling decent bowling line up for Aus minus the spinner. Archer / Tongue Atkinson Carse Stokes is a decent attack.

...by Australia and 21 by England. Monty Noble commented: It is hardly creditable that two international sides should average five "misses" an innings, or nine every match. In other words the figure was considered very high for the time. It didn't include missed stumpings and run-outs, of which...
