Franchise Cricket in England Domestic Season 2025

Now the Test is finished the ECB's franchise competition starts tomorrow with North London playing South London.

Only problem is the North London squad has: Pope, Smith, Overton and Dawson all involved to a greater or lesser extent at the Oval in the last few days. WIll they be up for it? Will Dawson be wearing sun glasses, if he does play? Or will North London not have a recognised 'keeper to select? Atkinson is in the South London squad.
Bet your life that the ECB would insist on all those players resting, citing player welfare, if it was a County Championship match tomorrow or even a T20 Blast but will they ignore player welfare so that they can play a bit of franchise cricket on behalf of the ECB? (who still run things this year) Next year of course such decisions will be made by the private investors.

Think they’ll rest all of the above apart from Dawson, which will tell us quite a bit…

It’s weird, I’ve always found the concept of 18 FC counties completely shut off from the Minor Counties a bit odd (even more so in my neck of the woods in Watford, the people I know from North London don’t care about the concept of Middlesex!), but at least I watch county matches in the knowledge that it matters a lot to people from those counties. I’ll watch the Hundred to keep a close eye on the likes of Rehan Ahmed and Ben McKinney, like I do for county games, but can we say anyone cares about who wins or loses these games?

We're watching the Oval team next Saturday against the Welsh Fire. More interested in the ladies than the men's.

Apparently England players can earn double their test match appearance fee for a one off appearance in this. I suspect they will want to be playing a few games.
Liam Dawson does play, Pope and Smith both rested for the first game, most of England's Test batters will be playing in this (I assume all apart from Stokes), but most of the bowlers will be rested (apart from Dawson it seems!)

"players receive match fees for appearances, which are approximately £12,500 per Test, £5,000 per one-day international, and £3,500 for a T20I."

Are we saying they earn £25k per Hundred game????

Watched a bit of the Women's this afternoon, I see they've at least improved the graphics by removing the rubbish up the sides of the screen. Still seems odd how they do present the score, but it's better.

Another poor game looks likely though.

I don't like the fact that you can rarely ever see how many runs a team has actually scored.

Yes, I was coming back from the gym last night and listening to the TMS commentary and they were just giving runs needed and balls left. I guess that's because they were basically just reading off a TV screen.

35 off 50 has no context unless you know what the other total was. It could be a tough ask or a cakewalk.

**** me, the bowling figures are even worse, why would you put the runs conceded column before balls bowled???

Also, big fan of the make up of the Manchester team. It’s almost 4 keepers then 7 bowlers.
