I wouldn't have picked Arshdeep, probably someone like Rana (or Kamboj among the newer ones). The rest of the bowling unit is fine. Sarfaraz for Sundar also makes more sense imo.
Not sold on deploying Arshdeep at Test, but he does offer some left arm variety. Rana for Prasidh maybe? Paddikal is another close name. Re Washington, I think he is in BCCI's long term plans; and if Jadeja fails hard can see value in him.

Whatever it takes!!!
No major shockers for me in the selection. We have had the cyclic retirements thingy going since the original fab 4 days of Dravid-Sachin-Ganguly-Laxman. We lose an entire generation of players in 1 or 2 years and then we end up having to punt on a young/unproven captain all of a sudden. IIRC, Virat became captain at a time when people questioned his position as a batsman overseas in tests too. Hopefully Gill does just as good a job as Virat did. And maybe ages more gracefully as a batsman in his 30s.

My only surprise is they did not include a couple more (Shreyas and Harshit probably) and make it a 18 member squad.

Prasidh has been bowling very recently, looked in very good rhythm in both red and white ball matches I've seen him play. I would pick him ahead of the other 2.
For Washington, if Jadeja fails I'd rather re jig the xi and get kuldeep in, instead of playing Sundar anyway.

Why is harshit rana not picked? Why useless arshdeep🤦‍♂️ anyway hopefully england will give green pitches( would give us 50% chance) rather then roads
there'd always be something in the wickets for skilled seamers, Woakes in the 2023 Ashes, Fernando in the Sri Lanka series and so forth. I'd prefer if we make flat pitches when Bumrah is playing and green ones when Bumrah isn't though, if there's a way of knowing.

Siraj? Can't believe that bloke is still getting picked.

Not the most daunting India squad I've ever seen, dare I say... Plenty of talent no doubt, which is to be expected, but in terms of experience and/or success in English/overseas conditions it does look a bit thin.

Siraj averaged sub 30 in Australia as well. He wasn't much Good, but he wasn't particularly poor either. A perfectly average pacer. And it's not like our non-Bumrah pacers are tearing through opposition right now.

Too much pressure tbh. He and Bumrah are our talisman players. Better they focus on their main skillsets. Just hope Gill doesn't run Bumrah into the ground and utilizes the other workhorses in the attack.
I actually really liked Bumrah's captaincy as much I have seen. Smart field placement, Good bowling changes, does neither overbowl nor underbowl himself like so many bowler captains tends to.

Feel pressure must have come from the top to make gill captain. Bcci care more about pr then about skills. Bcci will be major reason we will never dominate at test cricket like wi and aus

The Kiwis did it, that 3-0 at home for India has proven disastrous, it's New Zealand's greatest achievement in this sport, they saved Cricket.
India are in transition. Dont be too happy in 2-3 years we will be back in contention for best team in world😀

Don't flatter yourself.
We have talent. But bcci never gives chances to proven domestic contenders rather gives chances to ipl wonders. If we have competent borad which isnt greedy about money and cares about test cricket with our population and talent on streets we would be dominant in test cricket but only if bcci stops selecting ipl hacks for test but goes for proven red ball specialists like England

Wow Karun Nair! That's a fairytale comeback story.
Sure is. Has he done anything to particularly deserve it, aside from India's batting being depleted by the all too foreseeable loss of Rohit and Kohli?
Been making loads of domestic runs the last few years, did ok in County (albeit in div 2) and did this in the Vijay Hazare trophy a few months ago.

Didn't really rate him in his first India stint, but has 100% earned a recall at this point.
