Was Dan Vettori better than the stats suggest

I will settle for Vettori=Oram as a test bowler

Guess it's just a matter of framing and phrasing then. If Vettori is on roughly level footing with the seamers then it's strange to me to focus on how the seamers sucked and how they could have helped Vettori more. You could just as easily focus on how Vettori sucked and could have helped the...

I too remember that James Franklin bowled poorly in Australia

This proves that Martin was the most regularly available seamer. What it also shows is that Martin played 36 tests, the next 6 seamers on the list played a combined 112 tests, and every single one of them had a better average than both Martin and Vettori. It wasn't consistently the same guy(s)...

This shows the combined forces of Cairns/Oram/Tuffey being just as good as Vettori and Chris Martin not being as good as them which is my whole point Let's ignore the James Franklin bit tho

He fizzled out badly and basically ended up a non-bower, but he still has a better test average than Martin. Genuinely was a decent test bowler circa 2004-2006ish but for reasons I never quite understood he dramatically dropped his pace and pretended to be a batter

I feel like some of y'all have a lot of trauma from the Vettori captaincy era whereas I sort of breeze over that era and have stronger recall of the Fleming era. Maybe just cos I'm old. To me Chris Martin is a second stringer who admirably battled on in his mid-30s when his superior but flakier...

Nah you're also focusing on the post-2008 bit where we were ****. Martin was down the pecking order until the end of his career when his contemporaries had faded away. Younger guys like Franklin and Tuffey had ok careers but had promised a lot more in the early and mid 2000s before fizzling out...

For like the first decade of his career we were an ok team with a perfectly serviceable seam attack. Vettori was what he was. It wasn't like we had a superior spinner being let down by poor seamers. This is all referring to post 2002ish Vettori cos he was definitely good early on, pre-injuries...

Astle used to nick off for not many most of the time. Also in most of his good ODI innings he started off boshing a few through the off-side when the field was up and then crawled through the middle overs at a painfully slow strike rate cos he had no ability to manipulate the strike :D

    Michael Slater in BIG Strife

Understood. I was really just talking about known criminal offending. I'd imagine most guys who end up offending probably have stuff in their background too (including criminal stuff they got away with), but even accounting for that, it's extremely weird to have no record at 50 and then start...

Yeah Vettori's thing was that he was very good at destroying minnows, and also he was good at being the only passable bowler when the rest of our attack were being destroyed (it felt like he built up a lot of credit by doing this against Australia). In the "in between" situations where we wanted...

It also probably depends what era we're talking about. I think you're talking about the 2008-2011ish era where it's generally accepted we sucked and Vettori was "coach, captain, selector, and drives the team bus ayyyy lmao". I would say that during that era Vettori's bowling avoided scrutiny...
