Rank these 5 Test openers in order (Boycott, Greenidge, Hayden, Sehwag, G Smith)

I’d go: Greenidge Boycott Smith Sehwag Hayden

Best batsmen against spin in ODIs?

Curious who you think the best batsmen against spin in ODIs were, as well as who you’d have at #1.

    Barry Richards vs. Graeme Pollock

Who was the better bat? I understand Pollock played more Tests, but I’m interested in absolute talent: suppose they both had sizable Test careers, who would have been better?

Dean Jones vs. Michael Hussey (ODIs)

Who was the better ODI bat? I don’t mean relative to their eras, I mean in absolute terms.

Better pure wicketkeeper: de Villiers or Flower?

Yep, my question’s entirely about pure ability with the gloves, not “greatness as a keeper-bat” or anything else.

Better pure wicketkeeper: de Villiers or Flower?

Who do you reckon was the better gloveman in Test matches, de Villiers or Flower? Batting aside.

    Australian all-time ODI XI?

As noted in the post above: “I’m also judging players by their careers overall, not just peaks,” so you don’t get just the 07 version! (Still a good opener cumulatively, of course.)

    Australian all-time ODI XI?

I’m trying to come up with an Australian all-time ODI eleven, but running into some problems. As a preview, here’s where I am at the moment (you’ll notice, most notably, Dean Jones and Glenn Maxwell missing): Gilchrist Warner Ponting Hussey Bevan Symonds Watson Starc Warne Lee McGrath I’m...

    Malcolm Marshall vs Richard Hadlee

    Including ODIs?

Aus xi vs WI xi vs SA xi (since 1970)

If Barry Richards and Graeme Pollock make the South African side, in my mind, so should Mike Procter. I don’t mind giving de Villiers the gloves to accommodate Procter. Not a natural gloveman (although a wonderful athlete), but it’s not like de Kock is a particularly special gloveman either...

Heinrich Klaasen vs. Faf du Plessis

Which of Klaasen and du Plessis make an all-time South African ODI eleven (batting somewhere between #3-#7)? Suppose the rest of the team is: Quinton de Kock † Hashim Amla Jacques Kallis AB de Villiers --- (this missing position could be anywhere from 3 to 7) David Miller Lance Klusener Shaun...

    MS Dhoni vs. Adam Gilchrist

I’m interested exclusively in their wicketkeeping abilities, not their batting at all. Across formats. Personally, I reckon Dhoni was better standing up, while Gilchrist was better farther away, and it’s up to which difference you think is greater or what you feel is more valuable for a keeper.

AB De Villiers vs Virat Kohli

I don’t think Kohli is ahead of AB by a distance in either one-day or T20I matches—I’d say it’s very close in both!

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Oh, why do you reckon so? Very hard to compare across such substantially different eras, but seems like a hundred first-class centuries is worth more than Knott—who was certainly excellent in tough situations, but was more of a reliable No. 7 or 8. (I’d certainly guess Gilchrist is a better bat...

The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I suspect “not outstanding but pretty quality” in Ames’s time was plausibly better than “not outstanding” in the late 90s or 2000s, and generally what I’ve read is that Ames was an excellent keeper, just not on the level of the keeping greats in later eras, such as Bob Taylor or Jack Russell...
